Offroad protection

HI, I would like to do some 'light' offroading with my freelander. I know it is not a defender but it should still be quite decent. I am concerned about which parts I should add protection though, since I have zero experience in off roading.

I saw something like this:

But I recon, I can build one myself, since I have a good friend of mine who is into steel manufacturing. Is there someone who has already done it?

Also, what about diff and sump protection?

Thanks
Mark

It would be easy enough. Get some packaging cardboard off a fridge etc, & build an exact template until you get it right. Install it & remove it a few time to check all clearances. Beef up the bolt areas on the template with a bit of stiff plastic so you can install it correctly for testing.

Use some 5083 aluminium plate maybe 6mm thick, or 5mm if you want to reduce weight a bit. You can get armour/ballistic plate that is a bit tougher, but 5083 will be a lot easier to get, 5083 is an off the shelf standard structural alloy.

If you custom build you could easily beef up leading edges. Probably best with some bolt on strips of 5083, which can be replaced if needed.

I would not weld joins. Better to fold & it necessary brace across joins with 5083 brackets and bolt with 316 metric thread bolts with Nylock nuts.

I was in the aluminium industry for 2 decades.

Bevel all edges before installing, saves cutting your hands later & during maintenance of the car. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

thanks a lot for your replies. Building it of cardboard (or wood) is an excellent idea, I can even use it for a few days to make sure.
