My wife experience a similar issue with hers. Happened regularly, and very occasionally with me, I looked at replacing the button, (@£30,might be a pain in the you know what to change) however seemed OK with a firm push, not heavy, and not at the edge, e.g. push in the centre.

Get the same on my I6 around 10% of the time. It's like it has a flat battery,or lazy starter motor and it flashes up "HDC not engaged" before having to press it a second time. |

Is the car manual or auto? My manual does this if my foot isn't fully down on the clutch when I press the button. |

I see you have a manual. There has to be some sort of switch on the clutch to allow the starter to engage - I'd investigate that, since what you are getting is the same as if you had not depressed the clutch. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
