UK mobile roaming.

British Gas have just replaced our gas and electricity meters with 'smart' meters. There's an extra box fitted now that takes readings from meters (and also sends info to some magic box that frightens us when we dare make a cup of tea!). Anyway, I asked the engineer how the info gets from our meters to British Gas and he said it goes through the mobile netework. He said the preferred network is Vodafone. I said Vodafone is Censored round this area and he said not to worry, if it cannot get a signal from Vodafone, it then tries O2 and then the other networks.

If my 'smart' meter can do this, why can't my mobile phone do it, just like it does when I'm abroad? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I only pay one supplier in the UK but can use a multitude of providers when abroad for no more than 5p per minute extra and from June 2017 it will be the same price throughout Europe as it is at home. Perhaps we'll get UK roaming then for UK based customers?

Do foreign registered mobiles get the use of all networks when roaming over here? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Yes, although most have a 'preferred' partner network they try to connect to first.

I have a Three PAYG SIM, as well as a French contract one, that costs no extra to use in Europe and many other countries.

As that was an EU regulation, who knows after the Brexit result but I wouldn't bet my pension on it.

The chances are BG has a deal with all uk carriers that allows them to use their networks to transmit what will in effect be a tiny amount of data. Our mobiles on the other hand are designed and set to work primarily with whatever our SIM card says. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…
