Door handles and lacquer peel

When polishing the car I noticed that underneath the door handles the lacquer has started to peel, similar to what happens with the boot handle which i have read about on here, but I haven't seen any mention of it happening around the door handles.
There is a bit of vertical play in the handles which probably accounts for how it has happened but how to resolve it, take the door cards off and try to tighten the inner part of the handle/lock mechanism or as the exterior handles just pull of is it likely to be them that are worn and need replacing.
Then there is how to repair/protect the damaged surface, clean up the flaking and touch it up with a can of lacquer or apply a strip of paint protection film.
Any thoughts or experiences are appreciated.
