If one was to fit such units to a non Xenon car what happens with the automatic leveling function Xenon need to have as the Halogens have only the manual system fitted.

So if Xenon units were fitted do the lights come with the self level fitted, do you have to get that and fitted too? and if not and you were to fit them I assume it will fail an MOT for not working as they are suppose to??

If it was just a case of swopping headlamp units Xenon for Halogen I might even consider it, somehow I dont think it is that simple? not to be fully legal anyway??

I'm with Landiroamer on this. There's a lot of people on here know a damn site more than me on the mechanics of cars and have helped me a lot. Xenon upgrade is something I'd love to do on my 2009 FL2 (as is led tail lights) but I have searched about it on here and it doesn't seem as simple as all that (including the legal bit on self levelling).

If you google it there are kits which include HID XENON bulbs, ballasts with all necessary wiring and ballast mounting brackets for £100 and seem a doddle to install but are they legal. Some of these kits are form 'reputable' dealers as well and not fleabay foreign imports

as im led to believe............. ALL xenon headlights have to be automatic levelling so any aftermarket kit or swapping out of halogen lights has to have this by law and will fail MOT if they don't, however......

not all MOT testing stations will bother with it and may well pass them regardless. How many cars (and lorries) are driving around with misaligned headlights pointing in opposite directions ?? are we really to believe that they have all just gone wrong that day? The cynical me is saying that certain lazy MOT testers are not bothered if the lights auto level, or if they point in the right direction or not, if they light up they pass!

the Xenon upgrade would be a nice one, but personally I would prefer it to be done legally and effectively.

I have a MINI with factory fitted Xenon and its fairly obvious when you first switch them on you see the beam move up and down as they set themselves up, I would think an MOT tester would notice straight the way if they didnt do this, so if they just ignore that what other things are they ignoring too?
Have we lots of dangerous cars on the road all of a sudden?

Ive heard of folk saying oh I have a friendly MOT tester Ive been using for years?
Does he come with a backhander at test time I always wonder, or you rub ny back and I'll rub yours kind of thing?

I'm having an educated guess here!!!
From a manufacturing point of view I would say that the auto level function would be contained within the HID lamp assembly. From the fact that you have to edit CCF to activate the HID assembly would indicate to me that the software would already be in the BCM which activates the actuators for self leveling based on the information from the vehicles sensors.
Till date I've seen nothing in the electrical schematic that resembles a auto level function module.
I think the more relavent/important point is that over the production life of FL2, the HID assembly had 2 different types - swivel and fixed. Dependant on your model it may be wise to get the "MY" specific assembly for your vehicle as the software is probably different, so plug and play with a simple CCF edit may be more difficult if you choose the later signature style for earlier models.
I have a look when I'm in Topix which will be soon if I have time £££.
In the meantime there's nothing to stop one of you guys doing this! MY15

I just think some MOT testers are plain lazy, if the lights come on and all the bulbs work then that will do. Its not a mechanical safety issue after all.......................

but your right.... If they are not checking lights properly what else are they not checking properly ? Confused
