Pushing 80

No not speed,Age.
Hi all,
Having been quoted £450 for a service by an indy dealer specialising in Jag/Lr who claims to be cheaper than main dealerships and normally paying 3/350£ in the few years that iv'e owned an FL [2011 hse] In the past I've done most of the maintenance on the families cars when out of warranty.Thought I might give it another shot.First off I played find the oil filter, the little sucker was trying to hide but I found it and after buying a flex head decided to attack it from the top.[I,m too old to crawl underneath now I doubt if I could get up] and use my boat vacumn to extract the oil.Anyway the jobs done, took just over 2hours inc' the fuel filter which was a Fomoco part probably been on since new.[done 49000m]Filled the fuel filter prior to fitting,no problems. The only difficulty I had was undoing the oil filter had to put a long ring spanner on the flex head to get extra leverage.Total cost was about £180 inc' the spanner.I bought 10L of c3 longlife from Millers.not faffing with 1L cans.

Happy days.

I serviced mine today and changed the filter underneath the car ,never again until I get a felxhead to do it , ended up removing intercooler pipe to get at it and spent an hour removing the filter cap , don't think the filter had changed since leaving the assembly line 3 years ago , I'm 56 and boy I'm aching all over and will suffer with my back problem later on at some point so well done for doing it at your age

Doing real things keeps you fit & young!

I am now a seriously worried that I let my mechanic change an oil filter, brake pads etc. I did these sort of things in the past! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Give most pensioner types on here access to a ramp and I would suggest they would do a better job of servicing their car than the spotty 18 year old at the main dealer with no interest on next to no wage.

£500 to do not much more than change the oil and filter is outrageous. Mad FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I was discussing servicing with local indy who I get to the jobs I cant. He said that he gets loads of people in who say that they have a had a "service" from their main dealer who has advised that, for instance, the brakes and discs need changing. They bring it to the indy to do the job and, on proper inspection, the discs/pads are all ok and the job is unnecessary. This is because the dealer's servicing routines do not include removing the wheels to actually get to the pads to inspect them - they just eyeball them through the wheel. Taking wheels off takes time and time = money. So, yes, paying dealers big money to do what amounts to an oil change is a poor use of your money. Dealers hourly rates can be eyewatering too when compared with a trustworthy independent. 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto - Stornoway Grey - Hers (His, really)

I use Alex Murray in Helensburgh but as I havent had the FL2 for long (3 months) i havent used him for any jobs on that yet. I have used him for cambelt/pulleys/water/pump/stat change on an Audi S8 as well as suspension arms in addition to numerous jobs on a number of other family cars over the years. He knows I always want to see/discuss the job in progress and any parts removed from the car. I trust him to do a good job having established a good relationship over the years. 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto - Stornoway Grey - Hers (His, really)

yes Alex Murray indeed has a good reputation in Helensburgh.

my wife knows his son Ian, he has established his own similar business.

don't think you would go wrong with either.

Don't agree with this: My local main stealer videos the wheels being taken off and the pads and discs being inspected and emails the video during the service so you can see for yourself what the situation is. They also video all five tyres tread and condition inspection and all round the bodywork and report on any damage including minor scratches they find and on anything that is obviously visible. And when you go to collect the car and pay the bill they go through it all again, if you wish.

Share the dealer Thumbs Up that's some good service they offer. We have a mini fleet or LR's up here and usually take the vehicles back to the dealer were we purchased it from. No one does the video service you've stated. Whistle MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

Had a video sent me from another make dealership on the wifes car. System used by the trade for years between body shops and insurance companies.

Not sure if it is good for the customers as all it showed was the state of the bodywork and wheels that were in perfect order as known by me but it does mean rogue customers can't say car was damaged by the garage at that point so is for them or us ?

Little Jonny doing it did no show me anything about the oil change they charge around £500 for Whistle  FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
