Sounds like your first move should be to get it on a diagnostic machine to check for error codes. You could be wasting your time otherwise. When was fuel filter last changed? Have you got a "reduced engine performance" message up? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Fuel filter was 12 months ago when last serviced. Due this month. On a full diagnostic machine in car, belonging to a ex LR tech now working for Audi it showed as problems around the actuator I think. As the car only does relatively short journeys I felt it was probably sooted up, hence the Wynns treatment. Tonight I revved the engine up and switched off. I could hear a sort of ziiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnng noise as the turbo slowed to stop. No grinding noises and no other noise. Should I be able to hear the turbo or should it be almost silent?

Shouldn't ever rev a turbo engine up and switch off. Reason being the turbo will continue to spin but as the engine is not running, no oil will be pumped to the turbo. You should ideally let a turbo engine tick over for a few seconds to allow the turbo to slow down before switching off. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

split turbo hose, split inter-cooler - obdII reader will give you an indication of low turbo pressure.
