old building sometimes mean old methods of work, but you have to decide, old exterior with modern neat interior or old exterior with hints of times gone by, with a modern feel

I'm sure nowardays there will be products on the market that meet both insulation requirements and leaving the charater alone, but are the pockets deep enough and wallet fat enough to do it Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Mrs G owns a property in Thirsk N.Yorks, the frontage of the house has to have wooden sash and single glazing, no arguments, If you fit upvc the window company has to remove them at no expense to the home owner, been there done that Rolling Eyes

half the street has upvc but the conservation order was made after those so nobody else can have them, existing properties will have to revert back to wood at the end of life of the upvc.

apparently double glazing reflects light differently and looks odd Rolling Eyes

one neighbour had double glazing made with old glass to the outside new glass inside, these passed the test but at considerable expense At work

There is an application in progress for the area the cottage stands in to become a conservation area. I was hoping to do the work before it comes into force. I think as a few posts have said, it is a balance between cost and period originality. I want to do the cottage justice but ultimately some of the choices will come down to cost. Thanks again for the help and advice everyone has offered.
