Roof platform custom build

I needed a roof platform to carry sixth wheel plus a few bits & pieces. It also had to clear the garage with only mm to spare if I am too lazy to remove it. So to get it as low as possible I have straightened the LR cross bars to within about 10mm of flat.

To fasten the platform I used a strip of 316 stainless steel in the cross bars tapped with M6 threads. Then with a few aluminium anodised spacers pop riveted to the underside of the platform, 120 rivets later, & bolted down with 316 stainless bolts. The platform has been completely rebuild to suit the roof rails & cross bars. I can return the cross bars to almost original including putting back the rubber strip.

If it does the job, then it does the job.

Since you don't appear to have the sunroof in yours, there is no need for it to be so high (no need to clear the glass when the roof is open) you could probably get it even lower still if you didn't use the standard rails. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

I've driven in Australia - it takes a few seconds for the aircon to cool the car down. You are raising a non-existent problem. Anyway, having the platform on top of the car will deflect the worst of the sun and allow a cooling breeze above the roof - a new take on the Land Rover "safari roof" of fond memory. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

As far as the car heating up. If you can't stop the sun hitting the glass anything on the inside of the glass is of not much help. At home I have blinds which reflect much more than you are allowed on a car & they are reflective and can still see through them. If I need to keep the heat out I close layers of curtains which does a reasonably good job. I have a few windscreen sun shades which work quite well.

To keep the car cool I park under a tree if possible, leave windows open a bit & when I get back to the car I open the windows if it is hot or in extreme situations open all 5 doors for a minute & run the AC. The AC I run all year round. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I've not even used my AC this year. In my case heated wheel is used all year round practically, that's not a joke! I opted for Fuji White to play hide and seek in the winter Laughing MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior
