Depression / anxiety

Evening all. Bit of a heavy one so feel free to skip over this if you're looking for some light reading.

I am, it would seem, suffering at the moment. I have battled my moods for some time and recently it has got to the stage where I am really struggling. I don't know if it is depression or anxiety or something else or nothing at all but after breaking down on the kitchen floor this evening in front of my wife I am off to the doctors to speak to someone about it (next week sadly). It is affecting every aspect of my life and I have to stop it going any further.

Have any of you been through anything like this? Every case is individual of course but would be good to know how any of you may have coped or been helped and how.

Thanks. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

That's not good, at least you are doing the right thing and getting it seen to/known about, a courageous step in itself.
I hope you get the help and support you need, and importantly come out the other side stronger and over the obstacles that may be in your way Thumbs Up

With great respect, this really is one for you and your GP (and of course, wife / immediate family) to work through rather than seeking opinions on an internet forum. Expert help is always going to be better than the smoke, mirrors and snake oil from well intentioned but uninformed onlookers.

For you. having accepted that there is a real issue and arranging to see the doc is the first positive step. I too wish you well and a very speedy 'recovery'.

Yes I've been there, although not to that extent. In my case it was a side-effect of a medical condition and I didn't really realise that I was depressed. Got no help from my doctor, but eventually (5 years!) I was able to overcome the condition (it would now be called ME) and suddenly the depression lifted. It was like emerging from a dark hole and seeing the world in the light again. I hope your doc can give you some help and comfort, but if you should find that there is a medical (ie physical) cause, it's worth trying to understand your body and work out what it needs.
It will get better in time - if my sympathy is any help at all then you have it.[/i] Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France

Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Thanks cqr. That is reassuring to read. You hear so many things about the side effects of such medication that it terrifies me even considering them, if that was suggested. But clearly they work for you, which is good to hear. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Don't worry, I'm not looking for a fix or anything. Just wanting to know I'm not the only one feeling like this and that there is help out there and what that help was for those who needed it. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

I can't offer much practical advice but echo the above, the biggest step has been made by opening up and acknowledging something isn't right.

While you wait to see your GP, keep talking to your wife, let her know what your thinking and express your feelings don't bottle things up. I'm sure with her love and support things will get easier, it takes time but you will get through it.

My dad went through a breakdown and the doctor prescribed antidepressants which worked, they may not get the right one or dosage straight away, but they know what they are doing and will sort you out I am sure.
My dad passed away three years ago and it has been tough as we were very close, I found myself going down at times but I am able to control my moods with regular exercise as I don't like taking pills. This works for me, but I have always been fairly active, so exercise is not a problem for me.
My dads depression started when he retired, he was used to working most of the week, so when that stopped it was difficult for him to cope with as although he liked to moan about work he did really enjoy the interaction with work colleagues and the fact that he was achieving something.
Personally (I only have my experience to back this up) I think that some people are more disposed to get depression but this can, at least in my case, be regulated by exercise. Medication also works.
I am sure you will be ok, all the best.

I once read that those that have never suffered from depression won't understand what someone who is, is going through

Speaking with those that have, will offer a realease of any built up tension or thoughts that are mulling about in your head

Anxiety is a form of depression, it's best to have a chat with your doctor, speak openly and he/she will offer advice and any coucelling that is available to you

It's good to chat, and realease and don't be scared or worried if the doctors offers any assistance via a prescription of some sorts

I have been there too and suffered from moderate anxiety and got better but had a bit of a downer a few months ago

A good friend gave me the best advice, that you don't need to worry about what's going to happening in months to come, you can't do anything about it, so why worry about it! Which in my case is very true

@Past Master - my wife had been diagnosed as a ME/CFS sufferer, had 7 months off work but got back to a stage were she can just about cope with working again. Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Five years ago my wife suffered from depression which was brought on by work related problems.

She was precribed medication and referred for counselling and was off work for 9 months.

The medication did not agree with her so at one point we were struggling, and I was a bit sceptical about the scheduled counselling.

But to both our surprise this is what worked and got her through it.

So from our experience l would certainly recommend counselling as a way forward for you.

Iain

Ps and I would like to add that although we have been married nearly 40 years I just couldn't understand her situation and why this was happening, and there seemed to be nothing I could do to help her.

Thanks Iain. Good to hear both sides of the medication story. I guess I won't know what I need until next week so fingers crossed it is a quick week. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
