Well he took Mirror signal maneuver to a different level. Looks like it was filmed in a lorry, can't say he couldn't see that in his mirrors! But then to just cut across anyway, what a stupid Censored

I guess the concepts of leaving a safe distance and giving way are completely unknown to the van/lorry driver.

While the caravan tug driver was a prat the accident was completely avoidable if the van/lorry driver had shown a bit of common courtesy but I guess, like common sense, that's in very short supply in the UK now.

As a retired trucker and also a caravanner, it is embarrassing to see the incompetence of so many caravanners. That guy should have known better. Glad the towing test is now introduced for newer drivers. It should be retrospective too! 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

I was contemplating this just a few days ago, while driving and stuck in traffic

What is it that turns (most of) us in Censored when we get behind the wheel of the car?

I'll be the first to admit, I'm far from perfect Embarassed

Many caravaners seem to think that because they can't see what is on the road around them due the the poor visibility they have (both because of the oversized shed they are towing and poor eyesight) that there is nothing there so they just cut in anywhere and everywhere and are surprised when they hit another vehicle. Either that or they are so arragant to think that everyone else should get out of their way. I think is is a combination of both.

For some reason caravaners seem to think that the caravan is supposed to steer the car. But as caravans are as brainless as some caravaners this may explain sudden unsignalled lane changes.

Another trait of caravaners is that when they have unhitched their shed on wheels and left it somewhere they leave the extremley wide accessory mirrors (the ones they never use) fitted and then expect other drivers to move over onto the verge/bus lane/pavement to avoid them.

My comment will undoubtedly upset some caravaners as there must be some sensible and safe ones about, but where are they?

Thing is you only need a towing test up to a certain weight. I think if the combination is right you could get away with towing a medium sized car and caravan and not need to take a test. It effects me, I can't tow my Grandads caravan with my FL2 because the combined weight is too much, but I could tow it with a lighter car...
So really the test is a bit pointless, it's not specific enough! I don't think it would help prevent things like this anyway, thats just pure ignorance!

Maybe you are right, Steven. I had forgotten the test is only for those over a certain weight. That needs changing too!

With caravans it is the width/length combination that is the issue, not weight. In the video above, the driver took no account of his length and arrogantly assumed the lorry driver would give way. He failed to use his woefully inadequate extended n/s mirror. If he had he would have seen his caravan colliding with the side of the truck before he got t-boned.

And.. Jimboland, I agree with E Yorkshire, you are! 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

right let me overrule here this is my dept (and jimbos as my new deputy)

the caravanner was indeed an idiot, but probably a bit lost and didnt realise he should be turning off until it was too late, somebody should have let him in , but he has a caravan so the great British motorists who hate letting people in, will even less generosity.

so don't tow a fing caravan,
If you do know your route and junctions, avoid road works like the plague for the good of your mind your clutch and everyone else.
I suspect the vanner wasnt a seasoned driver as everyone know that if you do need to be let into a lane dont choose a van or small truck in the hope that he will be generous they are the least likely.

why was the caravan not in the 1st lane in the first place. they should stay left at all times. ALL At work

Caravan driver totally in the wrong!

The notification that the M5 exit was down to one lane far in advance of where he tried to merge.

He decided to try his luck and sneak in nearer the junction. The gap was never there so he tried to bully the truck.
Not a good idea any day in my opinion.

A long blast on the horn usually deters the driver from cutting in and he had plenty of opportunity to abort his move and continue on the M6.

I dread to think what the caravan looked like after the impact!!

Agreed but the van/lorry driver could have avoided the collision.

I guess he decided to cause hours of holdups for hundreds of people rather than waste 20 seconds and get stuck behind a caravan.

Living in France I would be totally within my rights and the law to take out the UK tourists I encounter every week who don't understand the 'give way to the right' rule here.

Although the resultant finger or two I get as a result of a quick toot and pointing at the lack of road marking often makes me wish I had an old Series I Defender.

I drive coaches mainly, and it seems I spend a lot of time compensating for other idiots on the road. A popular one at the moment is passing on the the motorway/dual carriageways and realising they are at their slip road and just cut in.

Also some motorists feel the need to cut into to the gap between me and the car in front I leave to enable me to stop safely. A 50ft tri axle coach doesn't stop instantly.

There is numpties in all vehicles, but I try and remain professional as its my reputation which follows me from company to company and good drivers are in high demand.

I do believe though that some motorists will kill to get past a large vehicle. There a few out there who owe there lives to me as if I had hit the brakes they wouldn't have made it in and innocent people could've been killed. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

I reckon that "van/lorry driver" was driving an artic - twice as long as the car/caravan combo. He was about 2 car lengths behind the next car (dash cams do distort the view) There was clearly insufficient room for the caravanner to pull in (his combo had not cleared the truck). The truck had right of way. and being heavy (up to 38 tons), would have had to hard brake rather than just lift off the throttle to give space. He was left with nowhere to go, and with the weight he was likely carrying, braking was the last resort. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)
