We live about 1/2 a mile from a Shell garage so I always go there and they have just had a re-vamp and are now offering Fill Up & Go. For those unaware of this, have a read here: http://www.shell.co.uk/motorist/shell-fuels/fill-up-and-go.html

Being a sucker for a new app, I downloaded it onto my wife's phone and dashed up my local Shell station to try it out. It didn't work - got a message about my wallet app issues? Quickly downloaded the app on my phone and that worked fine although there was something wrong with the pump as it kept stopping and starting so I gave up at £13.78. Moved to another pump and it wouldn't let me log on - perhaps because I'd used it only minutes ago. Good idea though and you get a record on the app straight away which you can email and print out if required. You'll see it was V-Power Nitro+ 'cos I was in the Range Rover - if it'd been the Golf it would have got the cheap stuff!

Typical technical glitch I guess. Trial and error me thinks with this new tech. To be fair, I put V-Power into the Golf as it can be used in any engine and is good at cleaning etc. plus triple points on the card.

Pretty frock, I'll have you know! Goes anywhere a Freelander can but with a bit more finesse.

Oh yeah. When you said you were "in the Range Rover" I thought FFRR or at a push, the Sport. The Ewok sort of sits on its own for me, neither LR or RR. Unique at least! Well, until the DS came along I guess LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Did anyone here see the episode of Myth Busters when they tried everything to ignite a perfect fuel vapour to air ratio, by using mobile phones and completely failed to achieve ignition? Has anyone ever seen any hard evidence that it's possible to ignite fuel vapour with one?

As a medical equipment engineer in a previous life, I have never known medical equipment be affected either, consultants in ICU departments were always on their phones. Some very sensitive equipment can detect the phone signals and interference can be observed, I suspect in the case of a petrol pump it is more likely the company worrying about fraud over a fire risk.

Won't work in flight mode as you need to send/receive authorisation for payment but you do not use the phone outside the vehicle. You pull up alongside pump, open the app, take a picture through your window of the QR code on the pump, a few seconds later your maximum pre-payment is authorised (you set the app up to whatever maximum amount required in your settings), you leave the phone in the car and fill up. When you are done, you just drive off. The amount used is charged to your PayPal account, there is an immediate record on your app and you get a more detailed receipt emailed to you within an hour or so. Personally I think it's a bloody good idea - no more waiting in a queue to pay for fuel behind people doing a weekly grocery shop, no leaving kids, pets, handbags, valuables etc. in the car alone and it will undoubtedly cut the queues at the pumps.
