£1000 quid would be safe as it would be guaranteed - in fact you would be OK for up to £35k.
Last week I emptied out the life policy pay outs that will clear off my mortgage from my HBOS IASA otherwise if they had gone down I would have lost £30k and had to taken out another mortgage!
Now that A&L (I'm an account holder and shareholder) has been taken over by Banco Santander I find that I am now liable for Spanish Income Tax on my dividends, and I cannot claim it back unlike in the UK. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

Most commentators reckon that B&B and HBOS are probably the safest places for your cash at present; unless you prefer the under the matress route !!

I see the savings guarantee is to be raised from £35k to £50k, will that really benefit many people?? If they want to inspire confidence then they should go for at least £100k, or better still follow the example of the Irish and guarentee all bank savings. Again I can't see that will effect most of the population, so would it be that much of a risk to make that guarantee?

My eyes are on the ftse, all our savings are in shares (and with one company Shocked ), thats what happens when you take part in employee share schemes ... ooops. Only good news is its not in the financial sector. Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!

I think that the Irish could end up with a big problem if they end up with all the world's savings fleeing to their banks......................... anyway my understanding is that they are only guaranteeing deposits for up to 2 years.. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

Truth is that everywhere is safe.
Since when has anyone lost a penny on a bank in the UK?. The thing that terrifies banks more than anything else is a run of withdrawls. All banks trade on confidence (hence why we're in such a mess at the moment). If any bank were to actually fail to the point where savers actually lost money, the knock on effect on all of them would cause a crash that would make the 30's look like a tea party, hence, no matter what the cost, banks and governments will not allow this to happen. The shadow of the 30s still hangs over which is why all the governments are getting so involved so quickly.
I was quite amused at the americans over this 70bn bail out. Its supposed to be couple of thousand dollars per person allegedly. I don't know about you but, given the alternative, I'd throw a couple of K into the pot if it get things rolling again!
Then again, I'd also want to see lots of fat cats jailed for fraud here as well as in the US plus Gordon Brown jailed for criminal negligence whilst chancellor. We all saw this coming 5 years ago (single blokes in London earning 60k with 500k mortgages Rolling Eyes ) so they can't tell us the experts didn't know exactly what was going on. 07 Freelander 2 TD4SE Tambora Flame, side steps, privacy glass, mud flaps, boot liner and a tow bar. Ok it's the Wifes but she lets me drive it occasionally - if I've been good!

I think this is a quote from Obama in recent days ... "There will be a time to punish those who set this fire, but now is the moment for us to come together and put the fire out". The bail out is the most important event to secure the situation before making moves to get even with any one. I think the bail out is the right way to go whatever it costs it'll be less that letting things fail and go even further into free fall.

In America they are talking about the public 'main street' wanting revenge on the institutions 'wall street', however it seems that would be like cutting the nose off to spite the face, I'd say the bail out is as much about helping theselves as individuals as it is about wall street. Stornoway Grey GS ... It also doesn't help when a so called "expert" told the whole of R4's "Today" audience this morning that HBOS was shaping up to crash................................. because their share price has dropped 30% since last week.
Best place to put your money after the Irish Banks, Northern Rock and Bradford & Bingley is a good old fashioned Building Society (which are mutuals, owned by the investors and they can only lend money they take in as savings and cannot borrow!) and there are still plenty of small Building Societies around and one HUGE one - the Nationwide is the biggest mutual in the world! How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?
