Justice of sorts - but youve got to push for it.

Long story short, my daughter popped out of her office last June to go to lunch and was subjected to a completely random and unprovoked assault by a couple of drunk/drugged girls in the middle of the day in the middle of the City of London.

This resulted in an operation to correct an 'orbital blowout' - basically a thin cup of bone about half the size of a table tennis ball that supports the eyeball.

Luckily, 4 passers-by intervened (one lad was only 19), protected my daughter and the youths ran off. All caught on CCTV. After plenty of badgering of the police, they apprehended a suspect a few months later, all 4 witnesses picked her out of an ID parade and she was charged. Initially she plead not guilty and in the face of overwhelming evidence, she changed her plea to guilty. It really shook her up, so much so she changed jobs. My daughter got this email this morning:

Dear Stefanie,

Case Against XXXXX XXXXXXXX
Unique Reference Number XXXXXXXXXXXXX
I am writing to let you know what has happened in this case in which you are a witness.
At the hearing on 7th April, 2016 at Blackfriars Crown Court, XXXXX XXXXXX pleaded guilty to the following charges:

1) INFLICTING GRIEVOUS BODILY HARM, contrary to section 20 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861.

XXXXX XXXXXX was sentenced as follows:

1) 2 years imprisonment

The case is now concluded. However, it is possible for XXXX XXXXXX to appeal against the sentence. If that happens, it will be dealt with by the Court of Appeal in London. I will keep you informed and explain the process to you if there is an appeal.

I would like to thank you for your assistance as a witness in this case. Your evidence was very important in bringing this case to justice and your contribution is greatly appreciated.

The probation service would like to contact you to tell you about the offenders sentence and what it means. They can update you on any key changes in the sentence which might affect you. (example- they might be moved to an open prison). Please confirm that you would like me to pass on your contact details? If I don not hear from you then I will assume that it is ok for me to pass on your details to them.

Yours sincerely

Cheryl Carroll

Very pleased for you all. Whilst not unknown, she's unlikely to appeal having pleaded guilty. Her brief would have advised her of the likely sentence before she pleaded.

Sorry to hear about the attack but pleased that the offender was dealt with. In my experience of working in the Criminal Justice system for the last 8 years, I can tell you that although it is possible to appeal against the sentence, it is unlikely to happen.

She would not have received a big discount off her sentence because she did not plead guilty at the early stage. I would suggest that to receive 2 years imprisonment, there are some previous convictions that the Judge will have taken into consideration as well.

Steve, have a word with your daughter and get her to apply to the CICA (if you haven't already). I know all about that process through my work and she deserves compensation. Happy to field questions if needs be.
