Body Roll

Bit of a vague question here but I'll try and explain.

I have an early MY2011 and since moving to a new house I've had doubts about the cars stability.

I live on a dirt track which has some fairly big potholes and the track is generally uneven. If I go over any of the potholes the car feels very bouncy and if I'm not careful I can hit my head off the handle above the door. There's also a bit of a knock (intermittent) from front passenger side if I go over one of the potholes (which is more like a speed bump) at anything other than serious crawling speed.

Is the FL2 a generally bouncy car or should it be a bit more refined offroad? FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

A search suggests these are easy to find. I now know what the drop links look like Smile am I right in thinking they are connected to the anti roll bar? FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

I must admit every FL2 I have test driven has been a bit roly poly, Im looking to increase the stiffness of the suspension

I live up an unmade road and at certain speeds it is a bit bouncy, normally very slow and worse from the passenger seat, I get an occasional bang on some of the bigger holes, no where near as much banging and crashing as I had with the SF at the same mileage or less. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Ok that's interesting. I've only got an Audi A4 to compare it to which has much stiffer suspension and is a much lower car. I just think that if you were doing some proper off reading or green laning in my car you'd need a neck brace. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

20 years ago I had a Peugeot 504, as best as I can tell after this length of time, the Freelander is firmer & rolls a lot less. The 504 was all over the place around corners but it was very comfortable. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Trouble is, the ride can be a little subjective. One person's "soft" can be another's "bouncy". We like the Freelander's ride. Maybe the most comfortable we have had for the majority of roads. It can be caught out though. On the downside of a speed bump for instance, the front struts can drop to full extension and give a nasty bang. Answer: don't go so fast! 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Got to disagree with the advice to go slowly on bad roads.

I regularly go down unmade roads, most are distinctly uncomfortable at low speeds, lets say 10mph, the same roads at 30mph, and the FL suspension does an excellent job of smoothing out the bumps, 50mph is still smoother than 10mph, but control of the vehicle is compromised. If you were driving in an expanse were there was no danger of collision then this would not be a problem.
That said I occasionally go down a "road" that the residents deliberately leave in a shocking state - think craters rather than potholes, any faster than 15mph and the suspension bottoms out in most holes.
My advice, if you regularly go down the same route, experiment with a little quicker, you may be surprised. if you are out of control or the suspension is bottoming out (rather than topping out), then you are going too fast.

When it comes to suspension wear, mines a 2008 with 162k, so definitely past the first flushes of youth. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Interesting about the suspension bottoming out on the other side of a speed bump. I took a look at the main culprit pothole yesterday and it has a real edge on it rather than a slope down, so I suppose it could be like driving off a kerb which would explain the noise.

I would agree there is a real difference between very slow and not so slow. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Really? On a 4X4 vehicle? Maybe if it's been used exclusively on the road but if it's been used to anywhere near its full capability, I'd expect a fair bit of wear on the shocks. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Although I can't speak for the previous owner, the car has never been offroad with me and only since moving has it been using a dirt track for about 4 minutes per day. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
