Lack of power Can't work it out. NOW SORTED

Very Happy Hi All,

This is my second post so please be gentle.

I have a 58 plate Freelander 2 SE Auto 2.2 Deilsel which has got no go in it what so ever. Acceleration from standing is slow, Over taking is none existant and when on the motorway doing 70mph when it eventually gets there, as soon as you come to a slight uphill incline the speed just drops off and it struggles. However on an odd few occasion in the morning on a cold day for the first half mile the thing is like a possesed animal it flies, acceleration is realy quick but then it just reverts back to its old self a bit of a wet fart. There are no warnings on the dash. Also there are no signs of smoke coming from the back end during all this.

I have checked Air filter, Checked hoses that i can think of and even put a temporary EGR blank in to see if it would make a difference, but too no avail. I know a blocked fuel filter can cause lack of power but as it can sometimes burst into life normally during the same circumstaces (first thing in the morning when cold) it points more towards a mechanical issue i thought EGR but blanking did not do anything.

Could anyone out there please give me some more pointers on what to look at next or is it going to be take it to a garage to be looked at.

Thanks

Brian

I would change the fuel filter & air filter first. If not fixed, to a dealer or indie specialist for diagnosis. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Fuel filter is worth trying- you'd be replacing it at service time anyway! 2009 FL2

Wonder if the turbo is giving full boost, a diesel turbo where the turbo isnt doing its job gives dreadful performance ?

Check the turbo hoses for any splits, normally the one just under throttle body tends to fail.

Also might be worth giving some injector cleaner a try. Thumbs Up

If the fuel filter was not replaced at the last service, replace it.

Have a look at the air filter. When was it last replaced? Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Thanks for the quick replies.

It has done about 6000 miles since the last service, but I don't know if the filters were changed then as I did not own the car. I looked at the Air filter and it looked spotless and as the car runs ok for a short period of time when first thing in the morning that's pointed to me something mechanical i.e. Valve, Turbo or Sensor etc. For the sake of a few quid and 30mins work I'm going to get a new Air and Fuel filter just to rule them out.

Thanks

Brian

Surprised you didn't get the "reduced engine performance" message up. Often caused by fuel filter blockage (or as a LR Assist guy told me due to diesel waxing in earlier filters in cold weather) 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
