A lad on the Audi forum had is S3 stolen during the night, he told the police about the tracker, but sadly they told him that thieves can now disrupt the tracker signal. Althought some trackers operate on vhf which is not blocked by the above gadget Thumbs Up At work

I hope the police atleast check to see if the car was out and about instead of assumming it was been jammed. Rolling Eyes

Why would company have things like jammer on sale to "Joe public" as there would be no other valid reason to have one appart from stealing cars.

Or i suppose if you wanted to use the works van for a trip to calais without the boss knowing Laughing Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Not sure what frequency it uses but at a guess it would be illegal to operate in this country, so if you're caught with one then not only will you be prosecuted for stealing a car but also be prosecuted under the wireless telegraphy act too, which would probably carry a tougher sentence than for stealing the car.

Even if it's not in use, you can still be prosecuted just for having an illegal transmitter even when it's switched off.

From what I understand, only certain police cars are equiped (and switched on of course) to receive the tracker signal, and even then it needs to be within a certain range. Shouldn't trackers use GPS now, rather than radio signals? Phil

Trackers used to work and still do on the same principals. The unit is fitted to the vehicle, you pay a subscription and if it's stolen, you phone up the company report it as such and they activate the unit. The Police have certain cars fitted with Tracker detection units. When they are within a certain distance of an activated vehicle a beep will sound and a unique number appear on the screen of the tracker unit in the Police vehicle. Once informed, Tracker will put out an increased signal and the Police vehicle display will show strength of signal, in other words how close it is and direction of the stolen motor. That said, the main way of decting stolen vehicles, I would say would be by Automatic Number Plate Recognition. Most patrol cars have this fitted as well as Speed Camera Units and Static CCTV cameras.
