Not sure what frequency it uses but at a guess it would be illegal to operate in this country, so if you're caught with one then not only will you be prosecuted for stealing a car but also be prosecuted under the wireless telegraphy act too, which would probably carry a tougher sentence than for stealing the car.

From what I understand, only certain police cars are equiped (and switched on of course) to receive the tracker signal, and even then it needs to be within a certain range. Shouldn't trackers use GPS now, rather than radio signals? Phil |

Trackers used to work and still do on the same principals. The unit is fitted to the vehicle, you pay a subscription and if it's stolen, you phone up the company report it as such and they activate the unit. The Police have certain cars fitted with Tracker detection units. When they are within a certain distance of an activated vehicle a beep will sound and a unique number appear on the screen of the tracker unit in the Police vehicle. Once informed, Tracker will put out an increased signal and the Police vehicle display will show strength of signal, in other words how close it is and direction of the stolen motor. That said, the main way of decting stolen vehicles, I would say would be by Automatic Number Plate Recognition. Most patrol cars have this fitted as well as Speed Camera Units and Static CCTV cameras. |
