Overtaken by remains of rear tyre on M6

so , the previous day I had 2 new front tyres fitted. The rears had very little wear and were checked by the tyre fitters and pronounced as being fine and the pressures checked.
Drove six miles to hotel in Chester and set off next am to drive North. M53 M56 then onto the M6
Leaving the M56 onto the M6 I ventured into the outside lane for a mile or two before I became aware of a slight vibration from the rear of the car so I slackened off and eased into the middle lane.As I did so, the vibration increased and I was overtaken by what was the remains of my near side rear tyre as it continued along the outside lane for about a hundred yards or so before bouncng against the central reservation barrier then rolling further. I continued to slow into the near side lane then onto the hard shoulder.
This is what had happened.
The photo isn't high quality but shows how the entire outer circumference of the tyre came away leaving a remnant around the wheel rim.(which survived intact)
Presumably there had been a drop in pressure followed by overheating but the tyres had been checked 30- 40 Miles earlier and there was no change in road handling until the vibration (which wasn't very severe - even with practically no tyre there at all I must say the car was remarkably stable )I was unaware of running over any debris but Sue wondered I if we had run over something that sounded like Coke can some 5 miles or so earlier .
I have fitted a"Tyre Pal" device since this adventure!

I had this happen many years ago but the tread section even though it was a separate piece was still within the rim. The tyre was not that old either! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I also had this happen nearly 40 years ago on an old Landrover recovery truck while I was lift towing another vehicle using a Harvey Frost crane. In my case though, the centre of the wheel rim remained bolted to the Landrover while the outer wheel rim plus inflated tyre broke free and passed me in Stratford High street! It was a combination of a rusted wheel and too heavy a motor on the back I think. Whistle Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

What make/type of tyre was that and how much tread was there (prior to your mishap)? FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

lucky escape there buddy but at least it shows how important it is (on all cars) to have the correct load rating on your wheels. This shows the strength of Land Rover alloys.

Many Thanks for doing the photo - I am just an an IT novice from the steam age!

The tyre was only a few months old - 3/4 thousand miles perhaps and as i said I had only gone 30-40 miles since it was inspected by a tyre fitter who sold me two new front tyres - filled all 4 with nitrogen for some dubious reason and checked the pressures.
I wasn't aware of hitting any debris on the road.
The last I saw of the tyre it eventually came to rest lying on the central reservation - naturally having escaped safely onto the hard shoulder I did not even consider venturing over to inspect it!
The tyre was on of a pair I had fitted to the rear of the car.I normally go for Continentals but on this occasion they didn't have any ,time was very pressing and they persuaded me to have Barus "Made by Continental ,you know ; really good... and we have some in ...etc etc..."
Not saying it had anything to do with the make but all the tyres are Continental now...

I had always thought that blow outs were often the result of neglect - very worn or damaged tyre with low pressure causing overheating and I took some reassurance in thinking that if I checked tyre condition and pressures regularly this would lessen the risk.

The rationale behind the Tyre Pal that it might give advanced warning of overheating and pressure drop before things get dramatic.

Again, the stability of the car running effectively without a rear tyre was really most impressive!

what was the actual age of the tyre (DOT numbers on the side), perhaps it was new old stock....

could have just been bad luck of picking up a puncture, or the tyre was under pressured by the tyre fitter

either way, just a bad fortune and lucky that it wasn't worse Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Don't know , pc heaven, it's a point
-I am not sure it was visible on the rim that remained on the wheel and perhaps I could have looked at the other tyre but my curiosity wasn 't strong enough for me to venture across to the central reservation to inspect the tyre remains - if you escape the jaws of death once ,so to speak it , you should not rush to climb back in!

I did!
Been all Continental for long time now.

I must say I have not had great deal of trouble with tyres (Never probs with Michelins ,Pirelli or Continental)
- I did get a dodgy pair of new Wranglers on my old Discovery years ago which made it wander about quite alarmingly if you changed traffic lanes Took them back after 2 days and changed to Michelins with an immediately noticeable improvement even before I had driven 200yds. The Wranglers went back to Goodyear who begrudgingly admitted the the tyres "exhibited a certain degree of excess conicity" I got a full refund.

luck of the draw, I have had a Michelin blow out on me doing about 120mph, the tyres had driven about 2000 miles at that point, and had pressures check for the return leg of my trip hours before, as you describe above, a vibration which just suddenly appeared and got worse Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I used to ride a Ducati 900GTS with wire spoked wheels therefore tubed tyres. I'd just fitted new Pirelli Phantom tyres and tubes and was out for a ride, probably to South Devon when I stopped for a coffee. Not happy when we went to ride off and found the rear tyre flat. I changed the tube and carried on. When I inspected the tube later I found that it had failed along the mould lines so badly it couldn't be repaired. Took it back and got a free replacement and never heard anything more. Would have been so much worse if it had failed at 70 in the 3rd lane while overtaking. Doesn't bear thinking about when comparing to the slight vibration vanadium23 noticed.
