A minor bump in Spain -- Cost of Repair in the UK --

2011 Freelander 2

Just arrived in Spain for a few weeks holiday when my wife touched a post in the local supermarket...as per attached photos..

It is due a major service while we are here so at the same time I'm thinking of asking the local Land Rover dealer in Malaga to quote to repair/replace so I'm wondering about approximate costs of having the work done when we are back in the UK in a few weeks time..

Any ideas on cost would be helpful...

Though the wife is suggesting we leave it until we get back in case she does it again after it has been repaired..

if its hanging off then get it replaced over there if possible or try getting a hot hairdryer onto it and try and push it out yourself.

if it will last until it gets back to uk, a new 2nd hand bumper can be had for around £100-£150 + respray. it may be minus the fog surrounds and other bolt on bits but you can just transfer them over.

The bumper dent will easily reform with heat, may be lucky with the spoiler bit as well.

Isn't this like those videos you see floating around? from watching those, if you boil the kettle then pour it over the dent from the top it simply reforms back into (or close to) its original shape..

for the cost of boiling your kettle its worth a try. I would attach a link but i'm on a work computer, search for "plastic bumper dent removal/ repair" or something along those lines, I've seen at least a few of those videos in the last few months.

Thanks for the ideas, I've looked at a few videos and I'll have a go this afternoon. Hopefully It might be easier than some as I'll be able to pull the dent out using the hole for the foglight.

SUCCESS......Many thanks to you all again..

Both dents removed 'almost' perfectly with the help of a couple of hair dryers...perhaps 2 minutes per dent....

The only issue now is that the foglight is not held firmly in place but the only thing I can find which seems to have been holding it in place is a 2cm square piece of solid foam which seems to have become unstuck on impact!! Any thoughts

The foglight is attached to a plastic moulding which is welded to the back of the bumper, and is likely to have broken free on impact. I had the same thing when I hit a pheasant recently! Fixing it is a bumper-off job unfortunately as there's no access with the bumper attached. The thread below shows my repair.

It's certainly good to know that a crunched bumper will spring back into shape. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Once again I am truly impressed with what you can learn on this forum!! If this had happened to me I would likely have gone to a body repair shop and paid Lord knows what to have them pour a kettle of water over my bumper!!

Thank you for the knowledge which I hope I never need!

I was really surprised how easily they came out, even the really creased dent on the spoiler element,,,I couldn't bring myself to pour boiling water over it thinking it would damage the paintwork!!!

So I used a couple of hairdryers and you could feel the heat transferring through to the back of the bumper after perhaps 30 seconds and soon after with a little pressure the bumper reverted to its original shape.

With regard to the foglight, I've been able to 'superglue' it from the front, I'll let you know in a few days and a few miles over rough terrain if it has been successful..

Thanks again
