HALDEX // WATER // BREATHER

Freelander 2 S 2009

Recently I drove through a fair bit of water.

Afterwards the wheels started to make the clicking noise as if the diff is locked, at times very aggressie. I was advised by my mechanic that it is the Haldex system.

This got me thinking, I had the differential replaced by the same mechanic to whom I have taken it now not so long ago but they allege that they did not remove the Haldex or worked on it to replace the differential although I have noticed some topics stating that you have to remove it.

I wanted to put it on a load bed but the mechanic said it was save to drive. So I drove it to him and on my way an error came up stating transmission fault, reduced traction (if I can remember correctly).

A day before driving to the mechanic I was under the rover spraying moisture repelling fluid in the electrical plugs on the Haldex (which did not help) when I noticed a loose fitting (not for electrical).

The fitting seems to be for a breathing outlet, which fitting had a pipe attached to it most probably taking the breathing point to a higher level somewhere else in the car. It seems to be a breather for the diff or the Haldex.

Then I noticed that this fitting which connects to the breathing point was broken and therefore the breathing outlet (should it be one) would have been fully exposed to the water.

Thus:
1. Do you have to remove the Haldex to replace the Diff?
2. Does this Haldex system have a breathing point or pipe?
3. Would water be able to enter the system through this breather should it be a breather for the Haldex?
4. Would water have caused the faults which I described?
5. Did the driving of the vehicle after the clicking noises cause further damage due to the new error message received?
6. Would it be unreasonable of me to expect from the mechanics to have noticed this fitting with the replacement of the diff and to have fixed same, even if they would have charged me extra?

Sorry for the long post but I am gutted at this stage, first the diff now the Haldex..... gutted

Thanks much appreciated.
