Clacking/clicking sound

Suddenly started the other day. Whenever I switch off the engine there is a clacking/clicking sound, quite loud coming from under the engine cover. It lasts about 5 seconds ,stops then starts again after a couple of seconds, and again lasts about 5 seconds. That is then it until the next switch off. It is if a flap on a valve if opening and shutting rapidly.
Thanks for any advice here.

Bogart, are you sure it's not the Throttle body playing up? DAVE.

When the throttle body stripped its nylon gears on our MY10 the clattering / clacking noise on shut down actually had nearby people looking at the car. It was very loud and started very suddenly… no gentle clatter gradually worsening, it just went from silent to wake the dead in one fell swoop.

As you both mention throttle body will start there. Am not at home at present so no OBD reader to see if that points at anything. Yes the noise is quite noticeable and just came out of the blue. Quite one day a racket the next.
Thanks for the info.

Yes she has the well know knackered plastic teeth syndrome, both plastic cogs missing teeth. New body on order.

Bought this kit instead of a new body.
