OK I was being polite earlier - I know as a fact that modern cars use NO fuel when coasting in gear.

I agree with Avtur - don't coast in neutral because when the throttle is closed and the engine is above idle or maybe 1200 (i.e. on the overrun or engine braking) no fuel is being used at all. This is in addition to the stability benfits you get and the option to drive out of trouble if it appears.
