JDVS - double check the fitting of the H7 bulbs. It is easy to get them wrong - result - poor beam alignment Embarassed

United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Stornoway Grey

Just nipped down to halfords to get some of their in-house performance bulbs and fitted them vast improvement to the high beam now so i would not recommend the osrams in the h7 high beam but i would recommend their h11 for the dipped beam and fogs as i found them very good

I think dunkley201 has hit the nail on the head...fitment is very important.

I've only just got my first Freelander 2 (2010 SD4/HSE) and was 'very' disappointed with the headlights (dangerously bad). I also popped down to Halfords and bought their 120% H7's. Got home and found that I have 2xH11(low) and 2xH7(high) so popped back and replaced a pair for H11's. On installing the H7's I plugged the bulb into the holder then placed the holder into the housing (this isn't required for the H11'a, different fitment). It didn't fit well but brute force got it in. On driving that evening I was shocked, the low beam is 'better' but not great, the high beam was crap and they worked more like fog lights i.e. the bean pattern was everywhere. I then looked as how the bulbs were sitting and they were not sat in the centre of the reflector. So I removed them and this time placed the bulb in the reflector then pushed the holder in...no force required and wow! what a difference. I can see for miles on main beam.

I would like to ask a question...

As I have Projector H11's and manual level control, what is required to convert the low beam to Xenon? Can I just buy the D1S Xenon bulbs as they look like the have ballasts attached or do I need to replace the entire housing?

I know there have been a few words said about auto leveling and washers and if they will pass an MOT. My current understanding is that this shouldn't be an issue as long as the components fitted work (that's all that's being tested, not the design of the vehicle). As I have manual leveling (which works) and Washers (which work) i think I should be ok.

Any advice gratefully received.

Yes but manual leveling isnt a replacement for Xenon automatic in this case is it as you would have the drive with one hand on the switch constantly adjusting the headlamp level each bump or slope your car goes over, slightly impractical to say the least I would have thought?
If it was ok to have Xenon on the manual system I think the factory would have done it like that as it saves costs and we know they try to save every penny they can on production?
Whether the MOT man notices it or not you can bet in the unfortunate situation where the vehicle was involved in a very serious accident say at night they would check the car out fully and say hey your cars illegal you know your insurance could be invalid then youre in the doo doos

Hi Landiroamer,

You kindly responded to another question I had on this and tried to explain my thinking, I'll try again here now I'm on a keyboard rather than phone.

I don't think the auto leveling makes any changes whilst you are moving, this isn't just a case of not being practical but I would have thought dangerous. If you are traveling up a slope, you don't want the beam to be made lower otherwise you won't be able to see the slope i.e. where you are going. As traffic moving towards you is also traveling down the slope (assuming you are moving up) they are not going to be blinded. If you hit a bump in the road then there will be a momentary flash of the lights, that's just life and we all see that from time to time.

On the second point you may be correct as I'm not sure about the legality of changing them over. From what I have read it's not an issue for the MOT man, but as we know...Insurance companies make money and will do what ever it takes to not pay out.
