So I know in previous threads I have mentioned I want to get some GG ATs and quite a few bods have said how good they are. But im curious to know if the GG ATs are seemingly quite great how come the majority of tyre threads people seem to go for 'normal' road tyres?

Its this that keeps me second guessing getting the GG ATs, I cant afford to buy a so called winter set of wheels and tyres but im also keen to get the LandSail tyres off the front and the badly worn Contis off the back.  2010 HSE SD4 in Santorini black

The GG AT are an all season/all terrain tyre, which are a little bit noisier on the road than standard road tyres and may cause a slight drop in MPG due to the heavy duty tread pattern.

Its really down to personal preference and what you want to use your FL2 for.

IMO if you are doing mostly road driving in all seasons, and may venture off road onto tracks or even greenlining/pay & play sites then an AT tyre will do the job nicely.

If you just intend to stay solely on tarmac, then a road biased tyre might be better for you, and the FL2 is capable in all seasons on standard road tyres.

The AT tyres look nice and chunky, will wear well and will cover you well in all weather.

Road tyres will also do you well in all weathers (depending on quality of tyre) but don't look as beefy.

Personal preference really.

I had the AT's, and found them terrible on damp roads, so much so I removed them and spent more money on road tyres.

read the EU label for the tyre - wet performance is poor, which is how I found them 

I had no issues in the wet with them on either of my FL1 or my FL2,

only time they really weren't much use was when the tread was completely clogged up with mud or compacted snow,

No AT is going to be as good on the road as a good, dedicated road tyre, obviously, but I find the GG ATs perfectly adequate even on damp roads. But tyre design is a trade-off, and if you don't need the AT's capability off road you're better off going for a road tyre. What they look like really shouldn't be a consideration for something like tyres!

To give an idea I'll be 80% road, the rest tracks, bit of green laning and plenty of on and off campsites.

Not overly bothered about tyre look as long as they are safe and won't wear down super fast. Have 2 toddlers in car st all times so don't want to get stuck on camp sites etc. Daily commute is 35 mile round trip on motorway.

So long as you drive it like a Land Rover, not a Porsche, I'd say the GG ATs sound ideal for your mix of use - exactly what an All Terrain is meant for. Be aware that they are a bit noisier than a road tyre too - some people are more sensitive to that than others, it doesn't bother me but worth knowing.

An AT tyre will never perform like its road biased counter parts, and as already stated if you drive it like a land rover you shouldn't push the AT beyond its grip limits. That being said, it will also not perform as well as a mud terrain when in thick stuff. It is very much jack of all trades - master of none. Have a good shop around for tyres, you can find some road biased tyres which can be used off road to a point (80% road, 20% off road) which may come in on budget and be the sort of thing you are looking for.

I appear to have bucked the trend for AT tyres and went for Toyo Open Country Plus rather than the General Grabber and IMHO are worth a look as they perform fantastically on road for a 50/50 rated tyre. I noticed a slight (1-2mpg) drop when they were fitted over a set of Hankook road tyres, but over the past year have survived everything thrown at them.

I did around 30,000 miles on a set of GG AT's

Swapped front to back to even the wear out, no problems despite many peoples saying don't do it.

They are noisier than road biased tyres, the grip is less than a road biased tyre but you do need to be pushing to find that out.

They were a little skittish in the wet when new, but as they wore down I can only assume due to the tread blocks being smaller this behaviour diminished and they started to function like a normal road biased tyre.

I fitted them original due to great reviews on here and they really do look the part, but would I fit another set? If I did any regular off road travel, yes.

I have now opted for Mitchelin Lattitude Cross Contact. Another AT tyre, not as knobbly, quieter on the road and if I do get off road I will let you know what they are like!

My wife has GG AT's on her Fl2 very little if any mpg drop off . They will get replaced by the same if available when they eventually wear out .I've got Goodyear Wrangler all weather on my Fl2 which I'm very happy with.
