Wading problems

I went through about 150 yards of flooding (twice) tonight. It was about a foot deep.
My car is a 2010 XS manual.
Now on getting out of the water the clutch was juddering and the alternator bel was slipping. It was squealing and the lights were dimming and flickering. It didn't last long but

1) should wading affect the clutch? I've noticed it before.
2) is it new alternator belt time? (I'm assuming that's what the noise was).

Any advice will be appreciated!

Hi Cqr,

Yeah I've had the alternator thing happen before and it has always been fine after a while. Not sure what the clutch is about though.
I feel for anyone who is caught up in the flooding tonight. It's awful out there.

Many vehicle clutch housings arent sealed as they have slots where the release mechanism enters or have vents for cooling, the main thing is if water gets in it can get straight out again, theres normally a hole or aperture at the bottom of the bell housing to allow this, check if the cars been offroading nothings blocking any drain holes, judder should then soon disappear afterwards with use as it drys out due to the heat.
As regards belt slip try tightening it, but an old belt might have glazed with wear which doesnt help, renewal could be a solution in that case?

A tip I was shown once upon a time on a belt that squeaked very occasionally. Talcum powder dusted on the belt while running. Naturally you don't want to dump a load in, but just a dash makes all the difference.

Of course, you won't have talcum powder in your car, neither did I when my mate was telling me about it. It really does work, maybe useful if you intend to do more wading?

As said check belt tension, lubricating the belt with talc just masks the sound of it slipping and makes it slip more and for longer. As for the clutch the composition of the friction linings are very much like brake linings and do not operate effectively when contaminated or wet, hence the "Try Your Brakes" signs at river fords.

The alternator will probably be OK but check your starter motor for water ingress. Would you believe that on an "off road" vehicle they are NOT a sealed unit.
On my previous 07 plate FL2 after going through several flooded tracks on the "FL2 Bala Off Road Day". (look for it on here somewhere if you wish to see the water depth.)
3 months later I had to have it replaced at £300.00+ as it was totally "Rubber Ducked" due to water ingress Crying or Very sad
This of course does not get evaporated off as it does in the alternator which as a by product of constantly generating electricity also produces heat.
