CLUTCH NIGHTMARE!

So yesterday I was driving to work, heading for Windsor. I put my foot down to join the M4 Motorway and in third gear I see a slight dip on the Rev counter and a tiny drop in power. Then again in 4th gear, all of a sudden getting that sick feeling in my gut.

Clutch I thought! It has to be. So after finishing work I start the ominous ring around to get quotes. The dearest being £1200 and the cheapest being £560. It's booked in tomorrow as I don't want it to get worse, breakdown or god forbid something explode in the gearbox!

I HAVEN'T TOLD THE KIDS THAT CHRISTMAS IS CANCELLED! Big Cry

Shouldn't you have had a rise, not a fall, on the rev counter if the clutch is slipping? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Yes revs should rise without an increase in road speed, only your bank account should fall. Wink

Are you 100% sure your clutch is failing as when mine failed it was difficult to reverse any hills or pull away on a steep hill without it stalling.
The best way to test if the clutch is slipping when parked slightly bring up the revs put it in gear then slowly bring up the clutch to biting point if the revs drop then your clutch will be fine. I usually test in either 2nd or 3rd gear 3rd gear should stall the engine if the clutch is fine if it doesn't stall and the revs rise your clutch is indeed knackered. Thumbs Up

I spoke to my LR service manager about a similar thing on my clutch about 25k miles ago, I was getting a slight increase in revs then dropping back going into 5th and 6th. He said that sometimes the rev counter is overreading (it's fed from the engine management system) and that it's not a good test for a clutch these days. He prefers to see how it behaves pulling away in 2nd with the brakes on. As I said it's been 25k miles and clutch still OK. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

So today I got my freelander back from the Garage with a new full clutch and full service. It was definitely the clutch that was/had failed. The car is a completely different drive now. Alot more responsive in all gears and less slack if you know what I mean!

And the price Censored , I nearly threw up in my mouth. All done now though and I'm hoping there will be no more issues for at least a while!!
