Mot test

Any ideas, car went for first mot'd today as three years old at the end of the month, tester came out and said according to the screen shot,(which I saw) it was not due till the end of the year making it effectively four years old, although it was there in black and white did not take a chance and had it tested ,but wonder what the legal implications if any there would be at taking vosa at face value?

mot

Mmm! Was told in November when mot-ing the mother in laws car that you cannot get a car mot'd more than 4 weeks before it's expiry

Seems strange that the computer/VOSA would allow that ?

You can mot at any time but if you want to retain any unused period to be added to the new certificate it has to be a month or less. Smile

When you log one on for the test, if it has more than one month left, a warning comes up on the screen to let you know. You can still proceed with the test though. Unless the owner has got it wrong, it usually comes up on dealers cars that have been sold with a fresh mot (regardless of how much time they have left on them) or taxis/mini cabs that have to be done every six months. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Did you have it done at the main dealers? Assume not, but when mines three years old it comes with a guarantee its first MOT it will pass and anything needed is done free of charge, has to be done by the main dealer though.
Sounds like someones put the date into the system wrong on yours, entered it as a 2014 model year or something?

I had it done at a local non landrover dealer,I did wonder if it had any thing to do with the first owner who was a diplomat used the car for seven months then put it in to storage until it was just over a year old which then allowed for him not to pay vat on it.the screen at the mot station clearly showed the date of first registration and the mot date which was four years apart!

I believe diplomatic plated cars are exempt road tax etc and MOT rules normally don't apply as they are generally less than 3 years old.

it was probably registered as new once it came off the diplomatic plates hence making the MOT anniversary 4 years from the date it was originally sold.

There used to be Q plate system, whereby cars with no proof of first registration date or self build cars (including some Land Rover hybrid trials type cars) would be issued a Q registration. When I got posted back from Germany in 1991 I had a 3 years old Astra GTE and although I had the British forces 'D' registration it had be registered as Q867 GDH until I could prove its exact age. I just wrote to Vauxhall head office with the chassis number and they gave me the entire build history of the car.

Regardless of the registration mark (as these can change), to register the car for an MOT you have to enter the vin number into the computer and it is that which will determine which car you are testing and give the registration date. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Modern MOT testing obviously goes off the VIN now due to the amount of private plates around im guessing. Although if the car is not registered for its first year it will only be classed as 2014 car (for example) even though it rolled of the production line in 2013 ??

I had a Zafira (don't ask why I had it , lots and lots of problems with it) it was a 56 plate, but appeared to have been produced in late 05/early 55 plate time period. We worked out it was probably almost a year old before it got registered and had been sat on a giant car park at the docks or factory until someone ordered a car to match the spec.

It's 3 years from date of registration regardless of when it was built. Going to 4 years in 2017 Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Was that the MOT due date, or MOT expiry date. The expiry date of the first MOT will be 4 years from the date of first registration. If you trust me, PM me the reg and last 6 characters of the VIN and I can check on the system. No offence if you don't trust me - you don't even know me so why should you. but if the car wasn't UK registered until it was a year old (i.e. if it was tax free export or diplomatic from new) then how does that register on the system.

I know the VIN should show its true age, but if its not on the system for a cars 1st year (or more) then how does the system compensate for that ?

its got me really curious now as have had tax free cars abroad in the past but only ever brought 2 back to be UK registered.
