I am looking for advice on servicing my new (to me) FL2 2007 HSE TD4. It has 95000 miles on the clock and I asked at a Landrover dealer about future servicing cost. Now I thought it would be higher than the average car but the next 3 years seem a bit high at £390, £499 and £390 and the year after that which is the 10th year service is a staggering £2100, this includes the timing belt, water pump and transmission oil change and a few other things I can't remember at the moment. They have offered me a service plan at £37/month starting now but I would still have to pay an extra £1600 at the 10th year service and it doesn't Include any brake fluid change or a/c service. So my questions are should I stick with the main dealer because of the mileage or are independent specialists worth using, would their stamp in the book be good if and when I come to sell, if so can anybody recommend where to go near or just south of Bristol. I should add the car has the last 6 years stamped up so I've got a year to save up.

In my opinion, the average buyer of a 10 year old vehicle won't be too bothered about the service history being from a main dealer in the last few years. Weigh up the projected value of your car at 10 years old Vs the £3.4K (and don't forget inflation - that £2100 service now may be £2500 in 2017) on servicing for a dealer stamp in the book compared to an independent that could cost thousands less. In other words, would you pay a couple of thousand pounds extra for a 10 year old motor with @140,000 miles on the clock (assuming you do average mileage) that may be worth just £5K or less because it has 100% FLRSH instead of 60% LRSH? You may wish to consider carrying out routine servicing yourself. The A & B services are quite straightforward and only really requires a 27mm flexible ratchet spanner (about £12) to get better access to the oil filter housing. An A service costs me £53 and a B service £93 including all original filters and Castrol Magnatec A1 oil. I use a local independent for anything I cannot tackle and we have a good working relationship. He is always happy to give free advice and costs less than half that of a main dealer and does not charge you £100 for the free coffee when something unusual needs looking at.

I bought my late 57 plate in Feb 2011 and have done all my own servicing as I intend keeping the car for some time. The service book is stamped by me and all the Land Rover schedules are filled in with the dates/miles etc. I have done this with previous cars and have sold them easily for a reasonable price or passed them on to family.

So it really depends whether you intend keeping the car for some time and your appetite for DIY. You can save a considerable amount of money and know that the servicing has been done properly. - 2007(57) XS Auto, Rimini Red, Alpaca Leather.

I agree with Steve above. Find a good independant if you do not have the skills or time to DIY. I am lucky insofar as I have found a good indy in Huddersfield who are all LR trained staff. eh tu?

Agree with the above comments, but also consider your mileage. Once a car is out of warranty I tend to ignore the 12-month requirement and service on mileage only. With a 15K service interval that could reduce your costs significantly. As for the 10-year service, you could combine it with a holiday in Northumberland and get it done at TVLR! I don't know what their price is, but you can be sure it'll be significantly less than that, and they are a Land Rover service centre (although not a car dealer, which is why they can keep their costs lower than a main dealer).

I would agree with all of the above.

if it's outwith warranty and you want it serviced properly either do it yourself or use a good independant.

all you get from a main dealer is a stamp and an unwanted car wash.

Hi All

Many thanks for the replies. After reading those, doing a bit more research on here and weighing everything up I think I'll find an independent specialist. I could probably do some work myself but would also like to keep the history book up together.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an independent around the Bristol area, I would be willing to travel a bit if necessary.

Not my area, but make sure they use LR parts. Some specialists don't, and it's false economy, especially if something major needs replacing (and even worse if they charge you LR prices for cheaper copies!)

Stevie, yes. I found them when my son had a problem with his newly acquired Range Rover and was very impressed with their response to an emergency situation and very reasonable rates. I spoke to Mick at Parkside, he was the cheapest indi in the area but I liked the vibe of the garage. Having being armed with a load of facts from this site I spent 20 minutes chatting with him and he knew his stuff.
