MAF sensor Poor MPG Lots of black smoke

Hello All

I have been getting lots of smoke from the engine exhaust. checked with Hawkeye showed no real related problems. I checked the MAF sensor located near the air filter. did not seem to be faulty when checking the output frequency on the Hawkeye. I cleaned the sensor with a MAF cleaner ( be careful about using strong solvents in the sensor) allow to dry refitted. went for a test drive MPG around 35 no smoke Etc. This sensor will not show a problem if dirty. the system uses the incorrect output and supplies fuel as it think is needed. If you are having similar problems try to clean it first, I had the EGR valve in bits ( awkward to remove and fit ) before I got to this point. Lesson learnt. the sensors are expensive so as said use caution when cleaning and the correct cleaner. Most motor factors should stock it.

Regards

John F

Haven't had to do a MAF on the FL but did on the Jag I had - used Maplins electrical cleaner - aerosol can costs about £6 from memory and dissolves the crud off the sensor wire and blows it away at the same time. DO NOT brush the wire No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS
