Just give it a go, it's a good giggle!

We started using apples & plums from our trees, then the next year we helped out a few of the older residents in the village by clearing and 'recycling' some of their scrap apples too.

Reluctant to spend money on a press, we improvised with some of the usual spare items in the garage Smile

Best batches of our 'Bottle Jack' cider were had from the the late season fruit, especially with a few kilos of local blackberries added Smile

As others have said, keep everything sterilised, and all should mostly ok.

The only major disaster we had was that we shredded up a few kilos of plumbs and bottled them for a few days, to keep the flies and beasts off of them before pressing. This lead to a rather sticky comedy fruit fountain when the first bottle was opened as the stuff had already started to ferment and fizz up Smile

Before I was 18 I aquired a Tom Caxtons home brewing kit, all went well untill it was all de-canted into sterile pop bottles (3d each on them so lot of pocket money parted with) ... Anyway got to the bit where you added the sugar misread instructions and used TABLESPOON of sugar instead of teaspoon of sugar ....!!!
after 1 week of brewing woke up at 2 am to the sound of bang ......... tinkle tinkle comeing from airing cuppoard
well ( warm and dry= ferment quicker ..!)
mum not impressed had to go to garage to get full face welding mask , leather welding guantlets and PARKA coat

gentle remove to garden shed store carefully (like NITRO DO NOT SHAKE OR DROP ..!!!)

ALL SHEETS BLANKETS CLOTH,S including old army blankets had to be washed over next week TWICE ...

only good outcome was elder brother who was at teacher training collage in leeds came home for weekend ,and was going out with his girl freind (who I still hate ) some 40 years later,
he decided to have a sly glass of the "good stuff" from the shed 45 mins later his girlfreind said where is he , (my brother ) to find him sitting in the rain in the garden drinking the remants of the second bottlle and saying this is "bloody rocket fuel bruv!!! .)
Needlees to say her evening was a wipeout he he he (think that was the day she decided I was a bad influance on my elder brother ) he was 8 years older and should hve known better !! ...

after that he was only allowed to drink shop bought beer ...

MORALE OF THIS STORY READ ONCE, READ TWICE, READ THRICE, espesialy when it come to SUGAR ....

allways taste your efforts with at least 2 days to sober up .....
ENJOY and practise practise practise ...... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Wales

home winemaking - advice?

...

Anyone tried these? The website says 'just add water' but I guess they expect you to have containers, bottles, equipment etc?

http://www.creativewinemaking.co.uk/wine-k...t_195.html

Or any other recommendations? Ta.

United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black

Cpr
Dont be tempted to do what I did I was making some orange wine out of a concentrate tin. Put the ingredients in a demi john and out on top of the old CRT TV in the living room, when they had a shelf on the top.

Waited a week no bubbling so I put a table spoon of sugar in to give it a boost.

Came down next morning to find what looked like Quator Mass all over the Demi John and dripping down the back of the tv
and screen, a creamy sludge. The air lock was blowing off like a volcano chuckin this creamy sludge out all over everthing.

When it had calmed down and I had moved it to a better place, I gave it six weeks and then stopped it as it was still bubbling away, the wine tasted great but it was just like a sherry with a throat burning after taste but nice. Freelander 2 TD4 GS 2011 Manual Satorini Black (Current)
