What's the situation like in Calais/Tunnel?

Thinking of going away for a long weekend at the end of November but the wife is worried that we'll be mobbed by illegals while queuing for the tunnel on the way back! Anyone been there recently and can offer some advice?

I came over to the UK by ferry from Calais last Wednesday and returned to France on Sunday & apart from a couple walking down the road didn't see any sign of any problems apart from the French equivalent of Operation Stack on the approaches to the tunnel.

I've used the tunnel 6 times I think this year, and had no issues, last week being the latest trip. I've seen an increase in security in Calais, and once had an hours extra wait. You do see a lot of people around the trucks while they are queueing, but nothing around the car lanes.

What's more interesting is the fact that the people you see trying their luck are 99% young males...

I have booked Portsmouth/Santander for next March, back later in April. Avoids the Calais hassle entirely & saves some towing miles to southern Spain, although I will miss the convenience of the tunnel. Just the Bay of Biscay to contend with!
