Road works speed limit

Is it just me ? I live in Hamilton , there are major road works going on at the M74 , average speed cameras are in place over a 5 miles stretch with a 50mph limit ,Down near the M73 junction the 3 lane motorway turns in to two lanes . Every time I use the road (I stick 50mph) I get people coming up behind me trying to get me to go faster, today some idiot in a big red Mitsubishi past me doing at least 70 mph , I would say the average speed that people are doing is 60 mph.
Where the road goes from 3 to 2 lanes is well sign posted but idiots still go up the inside lane then force there way into the middle lane , there is going to be some hell of an accident at some point. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

The fact that there is a 50mph speed limit in place doesn't give you the right to drive in the right-hand lane at 50mph, holding up other traffic. The rules are exactly the same as on an unrestricted motorway - the right hand lane is for overtaking.

As far I am aware, you are not allowed to break the speed limit even when overtaking, is that not the case?

This is true. Overtaking is when a car is slower than the speed limit allowed.

Unless you know that section of road you don't assume anything, the inside lane to Hamilton is generally almost standing still and the middle lane is filled with those going slowly trying to butt in, the outside lane is for anyone due to road works. There is a very short section of 3 lane motorway before it joins the old 2lane section.
When it is actually worked on I'm not sure but seemingly not on weekends. 50MPH is a general Scottish limit for some reason, many miles of dual carriage way have 50 limits as do many miles of motorway, road works or not Confused my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Large sections of the M62 are the same now and they have introduced smart motorway technology....speed cameras all over the place and also hidden after bridges and overhead signs.

We already paid for it, now many will pay for it again.

But it could be worse I suppose, Toll Roads next eh

I was cruising at 53mph today in the road works and got past a few times, they then slam on to do 50 and then off again, I'm sure they don't understand the term average speed

Make you wonder though Do they get tickets or know something We don't Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

If you stick the cruise on to just under the average limit its interesting to see other people slamming on the brakes at the average camera points like its a gatso!

Surely if there is a restricted speed limit as in average speed area that means every lane whether it be 1 or 10 so there shouldn't be anyone in any lane wanting to go faster than 50. The use of each lane in these areas should just be for general traffic flow & no overtaking. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

Part of the problem, I find, in these average speed areas is lorries tailgating as they stick to the 56mph the lorry is limited too.
Given the generally accepted tolerance of 10% +2mph, then they would not be caught.

My kids love the purple pipe that seems to join all the average speed cameras together, miles of the damn stuff, they have got wise now and shout out "purple pipe" randomly , laughing if I go into a panic looking for speed camera's At work

Not too far from here there's a section of A road, all 60mph limit. There are a couple of straights, each with a speed camera, and in between there's a bend with an advisory 40mph max speed. It's unbelievable how many people slow to 40 for the speed cameras - then as often as not speed up again for the corner. I nearly saw an accident there a few weeks back when a car doing around 60 suddenly spotted the camera, hit his brakes and nearly got rear-ended by a truck whose driver wasn't expecting that particular piece of stupidity...
