Transfer/Gear Box Oil Leak.

Hi all, having a problem with the transfer box oil leak.

All works okay but have an oil leak from between the transfer box and the gearbox. I am not sure which of the two boxes the oil is coming from.

Does anyone (Alex) have any drawings of how the two fit/seal together? I am guessing a new seal or gasket is required.

Bear in mind mines an auto -

The input shaft for the transfer box is actually a hollow shaft (tube), so the transfer box seals on the outside of this shaft, the shaft is splined on the outside.
The tube seals on both ends, as the drivers side drive shaft passes through the transfer box, to the differential in the main gearbox. The gearbox and transfer box are connected by a larger hollow shaft that is splined on the inside. The drive shaft passes through this, so there is a seal and circlip on the inside.

So my thoughts are - there is a seal in the gearbox that seals on the drive shaft.
There is a seal in the coupling that seals on the output hollow shaft from the gearbox.
There are two seals that seal both ends of the transfer box input shaft.
There is a seal that seals the output shaft of the transfer box.

Can't see why you would need a picture Very Happy Very Happy

Hopefully the transfer box is dying, so change it (around £600) and change the coupling and seal (around £100).
If you can't do it yourself (and many can't (be bothered)) then the labour is going to be as much or more than the materials cost. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Thanks. Great info. Just have a small leak at the moment. Will show this to my local indie and see what they say.

Hi, I've had time to read your posts and view diagram properly and I think all makes sense now.

A couple of months ago I had the clutch replaced. I believe this involves removing the RH drive shaft. There is every chance that the two seals in contact with the shaft were damaged (they are 100,000 miles and 10 years old).

If that has happened then I think I would get a leak at the driveshaft and a leak between the gearbox and the transfer box.

Anyway, going to discuss with my indie on Friday.

Andy131, you said hopefully TB is on it's way out. Do you think it's better to replace the whole unit rather than a couple of seals. Could this be a sign of trouble ahead or just that the TB is getting past it's best.

The box is a few years old, they don't last for ever, some fail below 60k mine at 160k.

Lets say a garage would replace the box in 6 hours. strip the box and replace seals in 2-3 hours. so you are looking at 9 hours at £50 per hour. 2-3 years later you may be looking at doing the job again as the box fails, just do it once and walk away from that issue.
For me I don't like to be without Clementine ( I get grumpy, some might say unreasonably so), so when something like this happens I have to strip to ascertain the parts needed, rebuild for the next working day, strip again to fit new parts, and rebuild again, so solving problems first time is nice. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Thanks Andy131. I see your point. Would be nice just to replace the box. I can't find £900 just now (Daughter's wedding recently)

Going to garage today to get her booked in. Will look at options with them but probably just change seals.
