Strange how (with the exception of the odd dog-on-dog incident) it's almost always dog haters who have problems with dogs. People who know and understand dogs never seem to. Perhaps that's because they can understand and interpret the dog's behaviour better, or perhaps the dog behaves differently towards people who aren't giving off the aroma of fear, I don't know. Personally, despite coming into regular contact with all kinds of dogs I have never felt threatened or in danger of attack. (Granted, I don't frequent the kinds of areas where neanderthals train rottweilers to be aggressive, but even so!)

As an occasional cyclist myself I neverthless have to say that I find many cyclists more aggressive and less well behaved than the majority of dogs - and the cyclists should know better! With the application of a bit of common sense most cyclist v dog incidents can be defused very easily. It is in the nature of many breeds to chase anything which is moving fast. Generally this behaviour is in no way aggressive, it's just the dog being a dog, but since it can result in the cyclist feeling threatened or even coming off his bike as he tries to avoid the dog it's best avoided. So if you're a cyclist, keep your eyes open and look out for dogs looking like they may give chase. If they do, and they're ahead of you, don't just charge on past them - stop, and immediately you take away the incentive to chase you. And if you're a dog owner and you know your dog has a tendency to chase things, keep it under control anywhere it might come across cyclists, joggers, etc.

It takes two to make an incident, even when one is a dog! A bit of consideration on both sides goes a long way.

I recall a number of years ago my brother lived in Dundee and had a jogging route he did every evening.

A Jack Russell regularly run out of a garden and snapped at his heels while the owner stood in his garden and just watched.

David eventually got so Censored off with this that one evening he grabbed the Jack Russell by the collar and threw it over a hedge.

It never happened again Rolling Eyes

Im a dog owner and a cyclist, but I tend to only walk my dog in dog friendly environments (i.e the local forestry commission area) and ride my bike in bike friendly areas (also the local forestry commission area)

Please can all cyclists, joggers and other weekend countryside warriors announce their approach by using the fitted bicycle bell (required by law I believe) or by shouting which side of the track they are passing on. Evil or Very Mad

People in public places need to appreciate and be considerate of all other people in the area, regardless of whether they are walking dogs, riding bikes or jogging.

To prosecute or tag someone/thing for minor infringements is ridiculous and can usually be sorted by a few choice words or ultimately a smack in the mouth (although Im not condoning violence Whistle )

Out early this morning walking Lexi my 18 Month old Cocker Spaniel and noticed that the local Primary school has put up a large sign (at some very considerable expense to the school funds / PTFA funds I would imagine) asking dog owners not to let their dogs foul the area around the school. Fair enough, I totally appreciate the problem with stupid un-educated dog owners but only last week I noticed a child from that school (School uniform gave it away) allowing his dog to foul the path at the top of my drive. Not the first time either.
Yep, Milothedog said it all, my dog is far better behaved than most of my neighbour’s kids (especially the little Censored with footballs).
Rant over. Gone:
