Chinese to build nuclear reactor in Britain?

Is China nuclear technology proven? Are we safe?

According to the BBC:

Chancellor George Osborne has announced that the UK will guarantee a £2bn deal under which China will invest in the Hinkley Point nuclear power station.

Mr Osborne, who is in China, said the deal would pave the way for a final investment decision on the delayed project by French energy company EDF.

He said it would also enable greater collaboration between Britain and China on the construction of nuclear plants.

Reports suggest one such reactor could be built at Bradwell in Essex.

I think its just pure madness due to no proper energy policy by any governments over the past 30 or so years. Why are we paying the Chinese and French obscene amounts of money to build a power plant? Plus look at all the money/profits that will leave the UK, all that money could have been fed back in to the UK economy. The UK government is giving up our energy security I read something recently that there was a steel maker in the UK that was allowed to close by the government, this steel maker was the only plant in the UK that could manufacture certain parts that were required for the nuclear reactors, thus ensuring the UK's reliance on foreign companies. All madness! Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

The worst of it is they have agreed to an exorbitant price for the electricity generated so looks like Joe public will be paying for yet another shocking decision. I am by no means a communist, but we really do need rational, intelligent people running this country rather than the incompetent, inbred ruling classes we have.

Perhaps they went to the chinese so they could get one that is only just larger than a double decker bus? Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

I think it's a fairly safe bet that Joe Public will also be paying the decommissioning costs when the time comes - which of course will be at least 100 times the building cost. But who cares because it's in the future and "off the balance sheet"

Back in the 80's I did a lot of work with the UK Atomic Energy Authority. At the time they were world class in terms of capability and know how and had thousand of scientists and engineers etc. Successive governments reduced it to a small organisation that deals with decommissioning and we no longer have the people or expertise (all retired or redundant) to do it ourselves. Typical government short termism. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

If UK must build nuclear reactors I rather the French or European build for safety reason. China is famous for un-safe products and often disregard international standards in safety or environment and this is main reason China products are cheaper.
