spill /leak rail diesel leaks

I see that
1)posts about "exhaust smell in car " and "fuel leak" seem to end up being a fuel rail leak causing diesel to pool in recess around an injector and smell and when it gets get hot give smoke which smells a bit like an exhaust smell(Pictures on here seem to show No 1 injector (ie alternator end furthest from gearbox)

2) there was a recall re leaking leak-off /spill off rail for some Freelander 2's and Evoques.

3)The same engine and pipes are used in several Citroen and Peugeot vehicles -have there there been problem with these too?

Does someone know:

What is the problem here -is it the pipe leaking or is it the the connector or the tiny o ring seal or is it poor assembly of components ?

A diesel leak is clearly not like a petrol leak onto hot engine but still a situation to be avoided I feel.

I've raised a long time ago this problem and of course LR just hid behind cliches....
Here: http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic18842.html

What I can said about this thing once being there: mine was the same cylinder 1, the near timing one, and the problem was the o-ring on the return line. Exacerbated by the low temperatures in winter. Probably the rubber is aging, becomes rigid, cracks and, during low temperatures, leaks. In the end, there is a 10 bar pressure on that return line, before the pressure return valve.

Do you have this problem? Do you have a MY2007 as your profile says?
Sorry for these questions, but if true, it means it prove my point in the topic mentioned above.

Yes, Alex mine is a 2007.
Thanks for the link to your earlier discussion regarding this problem. I see the point you were making before others rather deviated off topic into matters of etiquette

Even if we accept that the risk of fire may be quite small it is still a risk that should be minimised.

Other factors are the unpleasant smell and the issue of dripping diesel on the road-our motorcycling friends come off their machines readily enough without our further" help"!

During the recall what do they replace?
Has there been a modification we should be aware of?

Andrew

They just replaced the whole return ensemble with the return valve.
In this way the return o-rings - the real problem - were replaced also.
Replace a 50 pound ensemble

Yes, that or the Bosch one mentioned above.
And the o-ring change takes no more than 1 minute.

I was wondering if the recall was to fit a an improved or up-graded part but from what you say,Alex the problem is one of O ring leakage and the spill rail and O rings are just replaced.
Mine leaked from No I injectors spill off connector.

On examination, there wasn't anything obviously wrong - O ring not split or misplaced.Presumably just had become degraded /shrunken or loss of compliance.

I replaced the rings with land Rover part s LRO 54612 £1.90 each x 4 (a next post service from Lr shop in Liverpool, incidentally)

I replaced the spill pipe assembly (though perhaps I didn't need to)
It is a fairly simple job and now all seems OK
By the way,I find that the spill rail pipes are same as Peugeot/Citroen -Part No 1574 FX - perhaps cheaper
