Clutch and whine

Hmm. Having already had a front transfer box replaced I was dismayed to hear the start of a whine over the last couple of weeks. It's been getting worse too. Today things got serious. I noticed a shudder under acceleration and then clutch slipping.
Is it possible that the whine could be clutch related? I expect I have a slipping clutch and another problem.

if its a manual then my money would be on the dual mass flywheel and the clutch

had mine replaced earlier this year at a cost of £700 at an indy

Hi RogB,

Well the clutch has definitely gone. Slipping and shuddering at 2k rpm. I just hope the whine is related and not another diff. £700 wasn't bad. I'm going to see what the local dealer will charge and take it from there.

i got my DMF and clutch changed and it was great, a whole lot smoother.

Unfortunately it then highlighted the droning noise from the rear which I strongly suspected was diff related. I very reluctantly got rid of the car as spending close on to £2k in under 2 months wasn't what I wanted (full service/front brakes/MOT/DMF & clutch followed by the diff)

A worn clutch shouldnt create a whine though??
You say you have had the transfer box done? I wonder if they damaged an oil seal or something and the clutch is now oil contaminated and the box low on oil hence the whine? do you have any oil leaks at all youve noticed??

Hi Landiroamer,

yeah that's what I was wondering. I fear the whine is a separate issue.
The garage can't take the car in until the 15th. I just hope it lasts that long.

my clutch slave cylinder had burst its seals and contaminated everything, apparently that's what caused the DMF to fail and I should have realised that according to the warranty company. I had no visible signs of oil leaks at all.

sorry, forgot to mention, no oil leaks I'm aware of.
Thank you both for replying.

can't see the connection between the dmf & a leaking clutch slave... Confused

apparently its all in the same housing, the warranty company (Warranty Wise) rejected immediately after their engineer had inspected it but didn't bother to inform me until over a week later. It was my garage that did the work that informed me 2 days after the inspection when they were informed.

I don't understand how the dmf could be affected by a fluid leak from the clutch slave.

im not mechanical sorry, I trust implicitly the garage I took it to and have used them for several years.

It was the warranty company approved ''independant'' engineer who diagnosed the fault once the gearbox, clutch and DMF were removed.

Apparently the report did not reflect what was said on the day during the inspection however Warranty Wise would not entertain it all in spite of several emails and phone calls.

They refused to refund any money so scammed me out of £300 that I had so far paid toward the policy, plus the cost of the new DMF etc at just under £700.

So a supposedly 'reputable' national warranty company ended up costing me £1000 for a part that was covered under their T&C but was rejected for a claim under their T&C................
