Made my own DRL controller

Hi guys. After my first drl controller didnt work and the second failed after two days i couldnt be bothered with relying on others work any more so i made my own. Thought id share on here as may be usefull to others.

Parts needed
3x 30a/12v 5 pole relays £2 each from auction site
Suitable wire £5 electronics chain
12x female spade connectors £1 auction site
A split charge relay £14 auction site
Double sided tape £2 auction site
Electrical tape £1 auction site

To be honest you could use micro relays as the leds draw no where near 30a but i had everything except the split charge in my tool box already so its what i used. Some pics below showing the build and install. I will put the wiring diagram up son as im home Thumbs Up

Taped 3 relays together

Power from split charge going to pin 30 of centre relay and earth to pin 85 on all 3.

All wired up with pin 87a of centre relay feeding pin 30 of outer 2. Feed from main beam to pin 86 on centre relay, on outer relays pin 87a feeds drl one each side, pin 86 takes feed from indicator for that side.

Taped to front of battery box. Quite dry there but taped it all up.

Temporary location for split charge till i find a permanent home.

Works as follows.
Engine starts, 2-3 seconds later drls come on, engine off drl off instantly.
Indicate and drl that side alternates with indicator.
Switch to main beam drl off

I want to refine it more yet as id prefer to have the drl remain on but dim when indicating instead of alternating. Need to find a way to make it latch untill a couple of seconds after indicator is canceled.

Colin

Should't the DRL dim when headlights are selected on (become side lights) and not flash or extinguish when functioning as side lights? I'll have a look next time I am in the car...

Good work though...

The law says it should dim or go out. I want to make it dim, gonna experiment with a capacitor and resistors to do this.

From an MOT point of view (and as of May 2015), the DRL only has to dim when dipped bean comes on, if the DRL takes place of the side light

As I still have my sidelights in use, they DRL doesn't have to dim with the other lights on

Thumbs Up

Those drls must be blinding the hell out of people at night! I just showed my brother mine and they lit up the street brighter than my old halogens did, but beam just shoots off everywhere. Would not want to be infront of you at night mate.

Also requirements for drl in headlight are different to seperate drl. Eg no requirement for yours to be off or dim with indicator

They are not actually that bad, though they are angled down slightly to prevent blinding people Thumbs Up

Update with wiring diagrams. First one shows current layout. Second shows added capacitor on the indicator input, now realised id also need a resistor to help maintain rate of discharge and maybe a diode to stop any back voltage blowing the cap. Third one is number two with a secondary output via resistor on pin87 to dim the drl rather than switch them off all together.

Yet to decide what way il go but il probably opt for the drl to be off when indicating/dipped beam on rather than dim them. Main reason for this is im fed up looking at it and cant be bothered to trial and error the resistance right now lol.

For someone looking to do this, it looks like really good info, way over my head though!

Yeah thats why i put the pin numbers on the pics. If i get time later il redo diagrams with visual components rather than symbols it makes it more self explanatory. When ive got the capacitor and resistors right il probably make a more compact version with micro relays as well.
