Here's a couple of examples of what is up for grabs on Autotrader at the moment. The Legacy is also available as a manual but in an unusual twist, the auto is in the same VED band and the quoted mpg is the same.

The Legacy has lower VED costs and in theory, better mpg but do you think the Legacy is more of an old mans car? Confused

What is your view of the Legacy saloon pab? It isn't very popular according to the car magazines and I was drawn towards it as I do not need the load lugging capacity of the estate. It reminds me of the mid 90's Audi A4 from the rear end.

The only thing that bugs me about saloons is the lack of a rear window wiper but then again, with products like Rain X and so on, it shouldn't be needed. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I have no recent experience of the Legacy - my brother had a Legacy saloon but it was a good few years ago now. IIRC his had the 2.5 litre flat-4 and he was happy with it, replaced it with an Outback mainly so he could get a couple of dogs in the back.

Subarus seem to be regarded differently here from many other countries - here they seem to be just another Japanese car to most people, whereas in the States and elsewhere they seem to be more regarded as 4x4s with off road capability (which is what they are). So for me any Subaru which has a boxer engine and permanent 4wd is far too interesting to be considered boring, or an old man's car!

In a way they're a bit like Land Rovers - if you want a road car something like the X3 is possibly better, but if you wnat something more, something with all-round capability, LR is in a different class. It's a bit like that with Subarus - if you want a boring road car then Volvo/BMW/etc/etc may be better, but if you want something a little different which will take you places the others can't, then Subaru is the way to go.

Nicely summarised there. My dad had many Subaru's back in the day and although you don't buy them purely for winter capabilities (he loved the car full stop), he fondly remembers his blue Legacy estate auto ploughing through deep snow with ease.

One bloke in a Ford Granada could not get up a snowy incline on a housing estate so my dad wound the window down and told him to wait until he had gone past. The bloke boasted that if he could not get up in the Granada, my dad had no chance "in that thing." Clearly, he knew nothing of Subaru's so my dad just cruised up the hill like the snow wasn't there, leaving the bloke with egg on his face Rolling with laughter LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
