United Kingdom 2015 Freelander 2 TD4_e SE Manual Orkney Grey

Makes you wonder as these components are supposedly filled for life whether anyone in the service department actually bothers to check theres some lubricant in them when rhe cars in for service and more importantly if there is is it at the correct level?
Or do they just assume its ok and never look?
Once they start making a noise its a bit late to start doing it isnt it?

Hi every one .... please forgive me for sounding a bit un-knowledgeable with Tech part names! What exactly do you mean by rear deferential problems? Is it some thing to do with a certain pump? or the actual gear assembly at the back axle?

The rear "differential" is the gear assembly in the centre of the rear axle inside the cast "lump" in the middle. Its job is to accommodate the differing rotations of the "inside" and "outside" wheels when turning a bend. If the differential was not there the tyres would scrub or judder when turning. The differential is lubricated by oil held within the casing. It does not have a pump.

Immediately forward of the differential is the Haldex unit. The purpose of this is to transmit drive to the rear axle via the differential input shaft according to the demands of the traction control. The Haldex unit has a pump and its own oil within its casing. The pump, provides the oil pressure to operate the wet clutches within the Haldex to connect/disconnect the drive to the rear axle as required by the traction control.

The differential is known to have had problems with the input bearing (nearest the Haldex). The rear axle is known to have problems with the wheel bearings (at each wheel).

Here endeth the lesson....

Nothing else except the routine service. I take mine to an approved independant Land Rover service garage and they charge almost half the rates of the dealers. I just remembered I had to change the rear wiper motor in December last year which cost me 68 pounds and I fitted it myself in about 15 minutes.
Very Happy

impressive !

So the rear diff does very little, it's mostly a front wheel drive?

I believe the normal split is 60% front, 40% rear until the electronics detect loss of traction and the haldex kicks in to send power to the wheels with most grip. Also uses the ABS and DSC sensors to lock wheels and move traction about.

That's my take on it anyway, and there are people on here who know a hell of a lot more about the system who could advise.

Surely the video shows us that the rear drive is either on or off but that it can come in very quickly if required and as directed by info from the ABS wheel sensors. Thus driving along on a normal road it's mostly in two wheel drive but as soon as a wheel speeds depart from prescribed settings then it cuts in. I also understand that it comes in momentarily when you pull away on a hard surface to give better traction. Sometimes if you pull away on full lock you can hear the tyres scrub for a second or two. Seems a bit over complicated to me. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The Haldex is locked from a standstill up until a certain speed unless slip or terrain response mode requires it to remain locked. Steering angle input also affects level of lock/torque split.
Haldex automatically engages under heavy acceleration also. MY15

While I was repairing my rear diff recently I searched haldex and came across a site dedicated to the ford kuga which shares the same platform as the fl2 and also the FoMoCo Sweden rear diff , the posts concerning thr rear diffs all could have come from this site . I have not got to the volvo site yet as they use the haldex box but maybe they were smart enough to use their own diff

So is there some preventative action we can take on the Haldex unit and the rear diff?

Fluid changes?

I can see some specified fluids in the workshop manual, with LR part numbers and capacities...

Haldex controlled coupling, Statoil SL01-301, LR part LR003136, 0.65 litres
Rear drive axle/differential, Castrol Axle EPX 80W-90, LR part LR003156, 0.7 litres
Power transfer unit, Castrol BOT118, 0.75 litres

The workshop manual also gives a draining/filling procedure for both the diff and the Haldex.

I'm been thinking it's time to do the lot on ours; transmission fluid, diff, haldex, PTU... 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

Oil changes are a bit tricky as there ere no drain plugs . The haldex can be drained by removing the unit ,the oil will drain as soon as you seperate it from the diff . Maybe you could extract a small amount of oil fron th haldex unit through the filler plug and if it is still clear you could replace the filter ( volvo part # 31325173 for gen 4 unit) they are not cheap ,I paid $118 Aud and was Quoted up to $132 ,I replaced it while I had the unit out at 120,000 klm . I dont know how you would change the diff oil as it would need to be removed and you need to fabricate a couple of tools to help remove the drive shafts from the diff and a bracket to bolt the diff to a car jack . Not very user freindly .

I was presuming to suck as much fluid out via the fill plug using a syringe and a flexible tube.

Changing the filter is probably a good idea too, from the drawings i've seen it looks that this can be changed without removing the entire unit from the vehicle?

I have to get under ours and see if it still has the original gen 3 Haldex in it, I presume so... 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

Ok so I bought a HSE 09 plate with 60k on the clock, and have now noticed it has a slight hum at low speed, but very slight.

Once I am up to 30mph I cant hear anything.

Is this the DIFF on the way out?

PS I knew the diff was a weak point on the FL2 when I bought it a few months back Rolling Eyes
