How do you use your manual gearbox

Right, bit of an odd question here.

I have an MY11 TD4 GS with manual gearbox. Since buying it last year, I have always felt it has a heavy clutch pedal and the clutch has always felt a bit "harsh". I took it to the dealers who took it for a drive and said yes it was heavy, but not overly so and there was no slipping so no issue. I took them at their word.

So many months down the line I still cant get the hang of smooth gear changes. My clutch seems to have 2 bite points - 1 shortly after beginning to lift the pedal and the other near the top. Unless I get the revs absolutely perfect when shifting (down more than up), the car gives a wee jolt as if the remaining power was all delivered at once.

This is only noticeable in 2nd and 3rd really. 4th/5th/6th pretty smooth.

So how do you drive yours? Clutch down and up fast? Down fast up slow? Lots of gas, little gas? Obviously depends on situation but in general flat road driving.

Hoping it is just me being rubbish but interested to know. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎

I have no issues at all with my clutch. Fairly light I would say (especially compared with a Defender!) and it lifts smoothly and bites consistently at the same point.

Gear changes are really quick, especially 3-4 and 5-6.

I would say you've got a problem.

I'd agree with Tim - I've always found changes to be very smooth (smoother than the Forester I had previously). I can't really tell you how I change as I don't have to think about it, it just happens.

I find it a very nice clutch to use certainly not heavy, I have a TR4 now thats is heavy and quite an effort to hold down.
The FL2 is smooth and always bites at the same point, certainly not a 2 stage thing.
If you go back to the old Fords with cable clutches some of them were extremely light and it felt as if the pedal wasnt connected to anything, but being used to hydraulic clutches the FL is as good as any Ive had.

Not really what I wanted to hear... Trying to convince my wife that we keep my FL2 over her A4 wont be helped if I say it needs to go in to get the clutch checked. Mind you id hope it was covered under extended warranty. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Seeing as the consensus is that it shouldn't be doing it, I've emailed the service person at my local dealer (we are sadly on first name terms) explaining the issue and asked of they could advise of worth checking and if likely covered by warranty. They know the issues I have with loan cars etc as I look after my 2 young kids full time making organising these things extra tricky.

Will let you know what they say. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

My 60 plate which I don't have any more had a normal to heavy clutch, it became very heavy towards the end of a motorway journey. Dealer replaced the clutch due to 'blueing' and I think a faulty slave cyclinder. I still haven't really worked out what the 'bluing' meant but dealer said faulty so changed under warranty.

The new clutch was still quite heavy 'ish' but changing was much smoother.

I always found the manual needed to be changed slowly and I would pause it in the neutral position briefly before moving into the next gear. Moving down the gears I would blip the throttle and this helped a lot.

That is interesting Wurzel. I find doing that can help too. It just seems very hard to get the gears changed at the right time at the right speed to stop the jolt. Service person came back and said she would pass the email by the service manager tomorrow and see what he thinks. Interesting that yours was replaced. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Probably signs of heat from slippage. Thumbs Up

Mine never slipped though, not once even under load with caravan. My mother in law did use the car for a while and she would just crunch the gears as she had no concept of syncing clutch to the gear lever, so I expect that might have done it.

As far as I know mine isn't slipping either. Always felt very punchy - possibly too much. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Holding a car on the clutch could do it. Terrible thing to do...
