Service corrosion check!!! Is this legal

Land rover wanted the useual £355 for the first service - robin b........ds
My local specialist quoted £225 but when I returned the car prior to the service for a few warranty issues (squeaky gearchange, clunking anti rollbar etc) I was informed that the service at the specialist could not cover the needs of the corrosion check and that it would invalidate the paintwork warranty!!!
So I asked them to do it at the same time, they quoted 70 quid!!!!! +vat!!!!!!!!! apparently it takes a full hour to do it properly Rolling with laughter
My disgust prompted a discussion about the cost of the service and an agreement to charge £295 inc vat for the service was agreed upon so I had it done there and then to avoid future issues. I feel violated!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this legal? the guy at land rover claimed that it was and that he had a similar issue with a honda he owned but I just feel like I've been taken for a ride.

i suppose if they are going to do a hours work, then a hours labour would be justified i won't do a hours work for somebody without been paid Thumbs Up

But the fact that another garage could look for rust too, is where there must be a loophole since you could take your car to non dealers service centers the laws on warranty changed. Confused Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I'd say they are on very dodgy ground.
Merc have a similar thing with a 30 year corrosion warranty but they aren't that fussy whether it has dealer service history for the first 8 years. After that they get stricter but that's fair enough. They also allow you to opt back into the scheme if you just have it serviced at a dealer again - no questions asked.

Its clearly an attempt to get around the EU block exemption regs and keep you tied to the dealer, but I suspect if they attempted to use it as an excuse to not fix a paint problem on a car that was still under warranty, they'd soon find the EU regulators breathing down their necks!

The prices do go to show that there is plenty of room for negotiation though. The old man got MB down from £450 to £259 last month. I'm taking mine in next week so we'll see what I can screw them down to. I won't be paying list though, that's for certain Thumbs Up 07 Freelander 2 TD4SE Tambora Flame, side steps, privacy glass, mud flaps, boot liner and a tow bar. Ok it's the Wifes but she lets me drive it occasionally - if I've been good!

For piece of mind I have applied Liquid Film in the lower part of all 4 doors and the hatch of my Freely 2. Liquid Film is a very effective anti-corrosion formula developed for the ship-yards to effectively protect the ship's sea-water balancing tanks against sea-water aggressions. The underbody I have painted with Perma Film from the same producer, which is easily applied by brush on the underbody of our Freely's. Perma Film is transparent and very sticky, and once dried, is resistent against salt and mechanical chipping for years.
The total time to do the above job took less than 2 hours. You require 1 spray can of Liquid Film (EUR 9,95) and one litre can of Perma Film (EUR 15,00). You can purchase via internet under "www.korrosionsschutz-depot.de". They offer an english site.
