Reduced engine power

I'd quite forgotten how bad it feels to suffer a breakdown - it's been years of mainly Japanese or German cars to blame! We set off on our first caravan tour yesterday and got a whole 35 miles under Freely power. Tootling along the A30 at around 60mph when power suddenly drops to push-bike levels. "Reduced engine power" flashes on the dash display and we pull into the next layby.

Britannia Rescue do their usual great job, offering us the alternative of being returned to home or taken on to our first planned destination at Slimbridge. So here we are in a field in rural Gloucestershire. Because it's Sunday the local LR agent (Cotswolds Motoring Services) aren't reachable so we'll have to wait till tomorrow morning to see what's to be done. Britannia will take us on to them as part of the rescue so that won't be a problem. Everyone says it needs to go on the electronic diagnosis machine to find the fault.

Anyone know of a likely cause? The car has been totally reliable up to now. It was serviced a month or so ago and oil, water and tyres were of course checked before we left, and the fuel tank filled up. There was no prior warning of anything amiss and no warning lights. Engine temperature didn't go up. There were no strange noises and the car will still start but on low power.

Thanks so far to Dave at High Lanes Garage in Perranporth for looking up local agents here for us; Britannia Rescue for a good job; Tudor Park Caravan site for stretching our planned 2-night stay for us. Hopefully there will be a happy ending. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Had this a couple of times with two different FL2s and new fuel filter fixed it. If you are lucky you might find that it goes away if you restart it. Which service did you just have? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Annual service at an independent Land Rover specialist (High Lanes Garage, Perranporth.) Don't think the fuel filter was changed and can't check at the moment but thanks for the steer. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

It seems to have rise it's head a few times this reduce power and it's only a fuel filter that needs changing (that's if it is that) I may start stating on a service that they change the filter just for peace of mind. rjc1944 still enjoy your break away. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

A second vote for fuel filter as cause, had some hiccups when towing our caravan, but not reduced performance message, due to fuel filter. I change filter every year now.

Had reduced performance message when EGR stuck open due to broken piece of swirl flap recently but since that was preceded by awful racket from engine that's unlikely in your case.

Hope it's fixed soon!

Fuel filter eh - if only!

Our caravan tour turned into an expensive holiday - the problem was the turbo! First off the independent garage (Cotswold Motoring Services) cleared the fault codes and then couldn't replicate the problem. Off we set up the M5 and M6, only to have the limp mode experience again. Land Rover main agent in Kendal (Kentdale) tried the same idea and also flashed in a LR software update. Off we set up the A6 and again the dreaded limp mode returned. This time they had to replace the turbo. Problem solved, wallet emptied - £1650!!!!! Two consecutive weekends spent mainly in and around garages.

Nothing but praise for our treatment by Britannia Rescue, CMS and Kentdale. All thoroughly professional and went out of their way to be helpful. We're now safely back home after 3 weeks and almost 3,000 miles. 34 mpg without the caravan, 20-24 with the van attached (20-21 on the motorways around 60-70mph cruising, 24 on ordinary roads at 40-50). Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Am I right in thinking that there was a change to the turbo in later models? Something about water cooling? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

What I really wanted to know under what circumstances does the "increased engine power" light come on then?? Surprised

We've had this happen twice on our MY11 car, the first being a busted turbo Sad, the second only recently being a failed temp sensor in the exhaust.
