Wing mirror motor replacement?

Has anyone replaced just the motor from a powerfolding wing mirror?

My passenger side one no longer folds. I bought a s/h replacement that came without the top black cover, thinking I could just swap my old cover onto it. Unfortunately the shape of the cover has changed and I can't fit the old cover onto new mirror housing. Big Cry

To save buying another whole mirror unit, I'm instead hoping the motor can just be swapped. But looking at the new unit I can't see anything obvious to undo to free the motor unit. Hopefully someone on here knows how (and indeed if it can be done)?

Cant see any mention where someone has done just that, but you say your existing mirror doesnt fold??
Have you checked it is the motor? or just assumed it is? I mean is the wiring to the mirror ok, fuse, has it just been knocked and needs resetting, door switches ok?

If its definitely the motor and you know it is as youve tested it by other means it looks like you could be pie n earring here and the first to do it?

Thanks for your thoughts LandiR.

The motor tries to work (can be heard making a noise) but fails to move the mirror in at all.

I couldn't see any obvious way of extracting the motor unit form the replacement mirror without mega dismantling.

Would probably be the pie an ear who reports back that it's a vain task, and don't want to be left with an unusable replacement mirror, so I think I'll play it safe and try to get an intact older style mirror... 2009 FL2

If your existing mirror doesnt fold and youve decided youre going the replace it anyway, you can hear the motor trying to work, have you tried pushing it closed by hand and then pulling it back out to its open position to see if that resets anything?? if its not working now you cant do any worse, might rectify something? I think I would be inclined to try it?
The mirrors are designed to be knocked closed if hit or caught on the move and many will jump out of knuckle and disengage and need to be reset by moving fully in then out?
Unless you already have of course??

Thanks for that, I can confirm I`ve tried the folding trick, with no joy.
Annoyingly the mirror being replaced is itself a replacement. The joys of buying second-hand parts, perhaps...

Unsure what stage you are at with mirror repairs.
Looking at the EPC it appears only 1- M3 x 25 screw in centre of motor is holding it in place.

Regards
Joe Fix it until it's broke !
