Sand or deposits in passenger footwell

Like the title suggests, I am getting what looks like sand, but I don't think it is, in the corner of the passenger footwell nearest the centre. I am presuming it is emanating from the pollen filter area but I have not had time to look. The car hasn't been wading or any off roading that would lead me to suspect that would be the cause, it is like the 'sand' is being produced. Just wondered if anyone had experienced this before I start taking things apart? Pollen filter was changed about 7 months ago.
Thanks in advance.

So far I am liking all of the suggestions but I think I will have to get the tools out at the weekend 😊. Not aware of an air-con drain, especially inside the footwell? I don't think the carpets are wet either but will check.
Thanks.

You do not have mats do you. A lot of mat backing material goes sandy as it deteriorates. Silver 2009 HSE

Hi Glynn, yes we have mats (sorry mudslinger Very Happy ) the sand is deposited on the top. I cleaned it at the weekend so when I have accumulated the sand again I will take a photo.

Ok, took me a bit longer to have a look at this than I had hoped but it has me stumped. The deposits are away from the bottom vent beneath the glove box so I know it is not coming from there. It is not coming from the pollen filter either. Any ideas?

Did you have the car from new? if not maybe a previous owner has had it on the beach or parked on the sea front during a storm and the sand has got into the vents below the front screen and working their way through the ventilation system?
Do you think it is actually sand and not say decomposing sponge/insulation material?

I like the thought of borrowers, but I am not convinced! Very Happy
It could be a sponge breaking down although it is very hard, some of the larger pieces are like a very hard egg shell material. Sorry if this sounds strange but I am trying to explain what the texture is like, I am sure it is not sand or egg shell but this is how the texture appears to be. Would a sponge breaking down be that hard? I cannot see where it would come from either, it is a real mystery at the moment.
