Just been talking to my son, he uses his FL2 for work as an agronomist where he uses his FL2 on farms and motorways doing about 25k+ miles/year. A number of his colleagues (all use FL2s) had a discussion this week about what to replace them with in the next year or two. Everyone agrees that the FL2 is brilliant at what it does on and off road (reliability aside). However, the consensus seems to be that the DS is just too plush and expensive for a working car and without a spare wheel not really a viable option (you can't call the AA out if you are miles off road in the middle of a field somewhere). People are starting to look elsewhere (Toyota, Jeep, Mitsubishi) and hoping that the new Defender might be an option if it's better on road than the current one. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

My thoughts exactly, although I won't be buying a Jeep or another Toyota. As such, I am also hoping the new defender will have a variant that is better on the road. In the meantime, going to keep the FL2. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

From what I have seen within LR, don't get your hopes up for a new Defender that could be a comfortable replacement for your Freelander 2.

The lower price range DS are set to come in September, with the lower output Ingenium and 5 seats (and possibly proper spare wheel) but will still start at a shade over 30k. Still expensive for the potential FL2 person.

Shame they didn't apply that test to the DS design ….. not to alienate the typical Freelander owner!! Life is not a dress rehearsal! |

Have Land Rover or anyone working in an official capacity for them actually announced that the DS is a direct replacement for the Freelander? NO! The DS is part of the new Discovery family, and on launch just happened to share the same power plant, nothing more than that. It's only the lazy dickhead Journo's at certain publications that have decided that it is....wait and see what's around the corner, and you *might* just be pleasantly surprised. I think you'll find that many LR franchised dealers did say exactly that … "The DS is the Freelander 2 replacement, and its launch coincides with the closing down of Freelander 2 production" We didn't make it up! I hope you're right and the original leaked LR models development plan does indeed give us a new LR model that does better match many FL2 owners needs, where the DS doesn't. Yes, well Dealers, as we all know, talk out of the back of their proverbial harris. It just so happened that the DS used the lines left available up at Halewood that the FL2 vacated when production ceased. No-one from JLR has directly said that the DS is the FL2 replacement, because it isn't!

Exactly my dealer said when I went in to buy a new Freelander 2, why dont you wait and get a new DS its really the FL3, its not quite a direct replacement, but then did they say that about the FL1 when it went to the FL2 because they arent really direct replacements either, and would it have been better to call the FL2 a Discovery Sport back then? considering how much bigger it was?? |

Tis' true. The US market does not appreciate the Freelander2/LR2 vehicle. Often confused (at a glance) by the masses with the ancient Ford Escape. Not certain it ever got over the Freelander 1's poor reputation either. It was also only ever offered in relatively posh petrol trims which IMO is at odds with its off road capabilities. At the end of ski season this year my girl friend asked me what it was! The Evoque has done much better. Wait...you get 17in steel wheel options, diesel engines, manual transmissions, cloth seats, optional sunroofs and G4 kit! |
