Mine were pretty clear I think a good spraying with the hose when washing the car helps.

I followed the advice of this thread on Sunday. I removed what felt like a whole bag of compost. These things were blocked solid with organic matter.

Any other top tips for a new Freelander owner?

Here's one from me and welcome, next time you wash the car open the rear door and pull the rubber from the plastic at the bottom edge of door, hose through until water is clear lots of rubbish came out of mine and it clears your drain holes out in the bottom of the door.
