Don't cut the power cable to make a direct connection to the 12 volt supply; you must use the connector on the end of the power lead into an accessory socket - which can be directly connected to the 12 volt supply - since the connector on the power lead drops the 12 volt supply to the correct voltage for the Garmin.

If you are fitting it into the central cubby hole, you can drill out one of the holes in the base and pass the plug through. The rubber mat will cover the hole. Or if you are removing the cubby hole itself the cable will pass through to the back of the glove box. Fit a flying socket in the glovebox and Robert is your mother's brother.
