The rear brakes no longer have a handbrake 'shoe', I believe the motor winds the pads onto the disc do no need to remove as you can see them as you can the fronts.

You can apply the electronic parking brake at <3mph - would be enough to clean the shoes (if it still has them - see above post). Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

And I've just remembered - if you apply the parking break AND HOLD the lever, the brake is applied as an emergency procedure. It's in the handbook:

My manual park brake appears to have just pretty much failed on me. Lots of handbrake travel with very little hold.

More likely the adjuster on the drum has failed. Either way, you're going to need to get the drum off to sort it out. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

it wasnt holding very well when i got the car last August. I asked them to sort it which they appeared to have done but clearly it was just a quick fix.
