Correct Oil level Query

I have just done the first oil service on my wifes 2007 Freelander 2 and I have a query about the correct volume of oil that should be in the engine. On level ground, the dipstick showed the level to be at the dipstick max mark just before I drained the old oil yet when I transfered the drained oil into 2 litre containers for disposal there appeared to be just slightly less than 5 litres that came out of the sump. The manual says that the capacity should be 5.9 ltrs so there appears to be nearly a 1 ltr annomoly between the max quantity as shown on the dipstick and the level as stated in the manual. Has anyone noticed this before, could there be the wrong dipstick in the engine ???

Did you unscrewed the oil filter?
There is a no return valve in the filter housing that holds a considerable amount of oil there.
Not to mention the oil imbibed in the oil filter element.

5.9 is the right quantity. I, for one, put 6 liters, with a new filter, and the level will be about 2-3 mm above max.
Which, by the time of next change, will be about at max.

Many thanks for the prompt response. Yes I did replace the filter (bitch of a job) as a part of the procedure and realise that the filter will retain some oil but with such a small filter I cannot image this to be that much. I will just assume that the correct dipstick is fitted and rely on the min/max marks to set the correct levels.

Don't forget that there is a fair bit of oil laying around the engine that will never drain. I.e oil galleries. Just use the stick.
